Publisher's summary

In this eagerly awaited follow-up to The Lion's Game, John Corey, former NYPD Homicide detective and special agent for the Anti-Terrorist Task Force, is back. And, unfortunately for Corey, so is Asad Khalil, the notorious Libyan terrorist otherwise known as "The Lion". Last we heard from him, Khali had claimed to be defecting to the US only to unleash the most horrific reign of terrorism ever to occur on American soil. While Corey and his partner, FBI agent Kate Mayfield, chased him across the country, Khalil methodically eliminated his victims one by one and then disappeared without a trace.

Now, years later, Khalil has returned to America to make good on his threats and take care of unfinished business. "The Lion" is a killing machine once again loose in America with a mission of revenge, and John Corey will stop at nothing to achieve his own goal - to find and kill Khahil.

Should have quit after the Lion's Game

I read Night Fall, The Lion's Game and The Lion in that order. The first two were great (especially Night Fall), but DeMille should have quit after The Lion's Game. It was just the right touch to leave people with the ending in their own minds.
I really like the character Cory in all the books. I think DeMille has captured the essence of a New York detective pretty effectively. But this book had Cory in countless boring meetings describing the boring nature of the meetings. Even Scott Brick, who was phenomenal in all of the other books, failed us here. Everyone sounded exactly the same and it was not good. The book does pick up near the end and it has one unexpected twist, but not enough to defeat the very didactic ending. Also, in this book Ahsad Khalil lacks any depth and there is not nearly enough of what was going on in his mind.
Worth it? I suppose, but I think this was a book DeMille did not really want to write.

Not as good as the first one...

I LOVED the first book and I am a huge Nelson DeMille fan, but this one just didn't do it for me. It had a harder edge than the first book, but less action in my opinion. There was a lot of needless F-Bombs dropping too. It was just OK for me.

The Lion

If I get to the Pearly Gates and St Peter starts hem-hawing around about my entrance, I hope I have a Nelson Demille book to hand him; he will be so mezmerised that he will forget all about me and I can slip right in! The Lion did not disappoint me, it was full of suspense and insights. I particularly like the manner that Mr. Demille handles the sensitive subject of Muslems both here and aborad. I am rivieted by the monsters he depicts that are created by the horros of modern warfare. It makes me stop and think.

Fun easy spy chaser for a break between heavy book

What did you love best about The Lion?

Easy to follow. Bad bad guy. Good guy with bad habits. Simple good vs. evil.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lion?

The ease that the bad guy moves through society

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Goofy 1950 New York City cop accent

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

Good to listen to something simple, black and white, to give my brain a rest after listening to a heavy book . Always good for light reading without falling into a sappy snoozer

The John Corey series is excellent and this book lives up to expectations. Read the books in order to get the most out of each one.

Gory but totally believable

John Corey comes through again - right at the riveting end! Well- developed, interesting characters. Corey's sarcasm reflected so well by the narrator.

Decent followup to The Lion's Game

I read The Lion's Game and loved the book. While parts of The Lion are predictable, it was still an enjoyable listen. Nelson Demille is a very good writer, but I would have enjoyed the book more if there was less gore. There is a way to get the point across without going too far, and he crosses that line in a few scenes.

The Narrator Scott Brick is not my favorite. This is my first listen with him and I did not care for his tone. He was actually pretty annoying.

Aside from the negatives listed above, I think the book is worth a listen.

Another Winner

Not going to get wordy here but this is another winner by Nelson DeMille! My only complaint is that Scott Brick, who I LOVE normally, read the voice of John Cory in a weird kind of Willem Dafoe from the Boondocks Saints monologue. Not sure what that is about... However, the book is a complete package and a must read for any true fan!
