Publisher's summary

Suspended from his job with the LAPD, Harry Bosch must face the darkest parts of his past to track down his mother's killer...even if it costs him his life.

Harry Bosch's life is on the edge. His earthquake-damaged home has been condemned. His girlfriend has left him. He's drinking too much. And after attacking his commanding officer, he's even had to turn in his L.A.P.D. detective's badge. Now, suspended indefinitely pending a psychiatric evaluation, he's spending his time investigating an unsolved crime from 1961: the brutal slaying of a prostitute who happened to be his own mother.

Even after three decades, Harry's questions generate heat among L.A.'s top politicos. And as the truth begins to emerge, it becomes more and more apparent that someone wants to keep it buried. Someone very powerful...very cunning...and very deadly.

Edgar Award-winning author Michael Connelly has created a dark, fast-paced suspense thriller that cuts to the core of Harry Bosch's character. Once you start it, there's no turning back.

Critic reviews

"Grabs you and shakes you-and it feels great." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Connelly is at the top of his form in this brilliant mystery. Dick Hill does an outstanding job capturing Bosch's cynicism and anger, confusion and hurt. Hill changes his voice well to portray the other characters, most notably the female police psychiatrist...this is a first-rate production." (AudioFile)

"A powerful book." (Houston Chronicle)

Bosch's past revealed

The Last Coyote fills in some of LA Detective Harry Bosch's history. Fans of Michael Connelly's relentless Detective know that he is the orphaned son of a LA prostitute who was killed in the early 1960's and the crime was never cleared. In this book, Bosch finally decides that he cannot let the crime go unsolved and, he finds, unvestigated any longer and begins his own private investigation, an adventure that once again gets Harry Bosch crosswise with the LA Police Department. The book has all the plot twists and turns that readers expect from Connelly and keeps the readers interest until the final page. I have read 12 of the books in the Bosch series and have read them in a random order. Wherever you are in your travels through Bosch's life, this book will fit.

Another winning Bosch novel

Sometimes Harry Bosch's antagonistic manner and somewhat negative outlook on life makes these novels a bit hard to take. But The Last Coyote is another example of Connelly finding the correct balance. The story line is a good one. The characters are all well developed and interesting and there are enough twists and turns to keep the listener interested and entertained. Dick Hill does another fine job with the narration and I'll keep listening to the Bosch series.

A good read

I enjoy this author. I prefer the narrator on the more recent books but this was a good story for filling in the background information on the main character, Harry Bosch. After reading several of the later books where the events of his earlier life are referred to I am glad the earlier books have been added to the selection at Audible.

Pulls You In.

This was a very good Harry Bosch book.I am listening to them in order and I have to say that it was nice to get a glimspe into Harry's past. This book really makes you feel like you know and understand Harry a little better as a character. Worth listening to!

Good read, great character

Been reading about Harry and his homicides for a number of years, love his acerbic attitude. This book is the first one that is a deep look into the character of Harry himself and his personal background/childhood, all tied in to his profession. Will be of particular interest to anyone into psychoanalysis. Dick Hill is superb, you will have no trouble following who-is-saying-what-to-who. Worth the download; made me stay up too late!

very tinny recording

the actor is still consistent and the recording company still does nice walkie-talkie and other affectations to the acting reading. The recording itself sounded like it was in a hollow booth and after the previous three books this was noticeably disturbing.

Great Listen

With this story, the listener/reader really has the opportunity to get inside Bosch's head.

Connelly does a great job of spinning the personal side of the murder of Bosch's mother with a really good detective story.

Dick Hill is good as narrator.

Definitely recommended.

Harry Bosch Is Not A Girly Man

Volcanic... That's the temperament which makes Harry Bosch, Connelly's tough-cop protagonist an anger-management challenge. In 'Last Coyote' Harry's driving-demons are revealed, explored, and confirmed. Connelly gives good plot. Bosh is its foundation throughout the series... Here Connelly builds that foundation out of the rock of the cop's psychic history. Except for a small character stumble toward the end, this book is a smart, clever puzzler that will keep you focused till its dark end. I'm looking forward to the next time Connelly lets Bosch lead me through an LA puzzle.

Dick Hill's character interpretations RESONATE!
