Publisher's summary

America has enemies - ruthless people that the police, the FBI, even the military can't stop. That's when the U.S. government calls on Will Robie, a stone-cold hitman who never questions orders and always nails his target.

But Will Robie may have just made the first - and last - mistake of his career....

It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn't seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkable: He refuses to kill. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and must escape from his own people.

Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a wayward teenage girl, a 14-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn't an ordinary runaway - her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against all of his professional habits, Robie rescues her and finds he can't walk away. He needs to help her.

Even worse, the more Robie learns about the girl, the more he's convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents' deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power. Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows in order to save this girl's life... and perhaps his own.

Consistently good

For a long book this kept my interest the entire time which is hard to do with so many chapters. Strong capable female characters along side the make characters was a giant bonus.

Loved it

Was a little hesitant at first because quite often these books are predictable. This one did not unravel until it came together at the end. Even though I did figure out that one of the characters would play a bigger part in the end than when originally introduced, I was very pleased at how well the clues were hidden.

Great!

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Ron McLarty is great as usual, 5 stars. Why clutter up a good thing with a not so great for the character female voice and cheesy sound effects?

Any additional comments?

I completely and thoroughly enjoyed this read, once I got over two voices and sound effects. Actually, I don't even remember hearing them by the end of the book, but they must have been there. And who cares if the hit man is lovable? Lovable is good! Makes for a much more sympathetic character. Relax and enjoy a great Baldacci ride.

A real page turner!

If you enjoy Fleming, Ludlum, Silva thriller/espionage authors, I know you will enjoy this author. This is the first book I have “read” of his and it is throughly engaging. The narrator (Ron McLarty) does an excellent job. I’ve been seeking spy/espionage authors that write series of books involving the same protagonist. There is a lot of fun running into a favorite character or two in these novels. Looks like I have a way to go as Baldicci has written 6 series as well as other many other books to investigate!

Fast moving, with more plot twists than needed

Lead characters were fleshed out well, but there were a surplus of people who seemed superfluous.

My Favorite Series

David Baldacci is my absolute favorite author. This was my first Baldacci book and I have listen to it multiple times. I love the narrator’s who really bring the story to life. I am sad about Ron McLarty and his voice will be missed for sure I am looking forward to listening to the next in the series again.

Not what I expected but pleasantly surprised!

I wasn't sure if this would peek my interest as I'm usually a crime / mystery reader, I was pleasantly surprised how suspenseful it was! Narration was good, both man and women reading different roles was great and helped set the tone. great read, definitely recommend!!
