Publisher's summary

America has enemies - ruthless people that the police, the FBI, even the military can't stop. That's when the U.S. government calls on Will Robie, a stone-cold hitman who never questions orders and always nails his target.

But Will Robie may have just made the first - and last - mistake of his career....

It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn't seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkable: He refuses to kill. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and must escape from his own people.

Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a wayward teenage girl, a 14-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn't an ordinary runaway - her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against all of his professional habits, Robie rescues her and finds he can't walk away. He needs to help her.

Even worse, the more Robie learns about the girl, the more he's convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents' deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power. Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows in order to save this girl's life... and perhaps his own.

An excellent listen

Any additional comments?

This is a thoroughly engaging story. Not particularly original, not serious literature, but an enjoyable story that keeps the listener's attention. I am not a fan of the sound effects that were sporadically added, and think it might have benefited from a couple of additional voices for the various characters, but all in all, a good listen I would highly recommend.

The beginnings of an endless love story.....

Would you listen to The Innocent: A Novel again? Why?

With Ron McLarty narrating, i'd listen to this again. If your into action and feed on mystery, this book is for you. The writing and narration really captured my attention. I wanted more more......

Which scene was your favorite?

When Robie crosses paths with Julie. Connected from the start.

Any additional comments?

David Baldacci has an amazing way of bringing a sense of "normalcy" to the rugged hitman called Will Robie. Robie has a job to do. A job that is dangerous and often puts him on an additional unintended path. In Robie's character, Baldacci allows the ruggedness of the hitman and yet also touches on the sensitivity of the man inside. Connecting the paths of Will Robie and Julie was genius. Although neither of them will admit it, they both somehow need each other. Can't wait for the next book in the Will Robie series!!!!! i've ready them all so far. 1-4

Another good Baldacci thriller

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Although the first chapter(s) were a bit graphic the story became worth the wait. It took off at a fast pace and never let up.

Any additional comments?

I liked the story and the characters, even Robie, and I'd like to see what happens next in his life.

This is my 15th listen of books by Baldacci and this may be the best one yet. I hope this is the first in a new series for Robie, Julie, and perhaps Vance.

Great book

The story was captivating, adventurous and still rather touching. Kept my interest & always wanted to get back to listening as soon as possible!
The narration was excellent. One of the best I've heard so far on the audible stories I've listened to.
