From the New York Times best-selling author of Blue Heaven and Back of Beyond, C.J. Box, comes a gripping new thriller.
When teenagers Danielle and Gracie Sullivan take a clandestine car trip to visit their friend in Montana, little do they know it's the last time anyone will ever hear from them again. The girls and their car simply vanish.
Cody Hoyt, who's just lost his job and has fallen off the wagon after a long stretch of sobriety, is in no condition to investigate. But his son Justin, who the girls were going to visit, and his former partner, Cassie Dewell, convince him to drive south to their last known location. As Cody makes his way to the remote stretch of Montana highway where the girls went missing, Cassie discovers that there have been scores of similar disappearances in the state. There's a serial killer out there roaming the highways, and Cody and Cassie must find him before he takes more lives.

Very sick. Ugh. Just ugh.
Say something about yourself!
I like books set in Montana where place plays a prominent role. I thought the kidnapped girls might develop into detailed gross gore. That didn't happen. It must be part of a series but I'm not inspired to read the one that came before, nor do I want to read the next one.
Authenticity demerits: the detour described over Beartooth Pass in the third week in November is highly improbably. That pass closes in mid October and to the best of my knowledge, has never been open in November. Global warming may change that sometime in the future but it has not yet happened. IF the pass were open, it has an elevation of almost 11,000 feet and has hair raising hairpin turns that would either scare the bejesus out of a high school driver or send her over the edge when she hit black ice. Even a teenage driver can't text and stay alive on that road.
No native Montanan would route anyone over that pass in October much less November. I've seen it closed (for days) by snow in July.
No trucker would detour over Beartooth Pass because, not only is it closed in November, I don't think large semi trucks are allowed.
Authenticity points: the road through Yellowstone Park from Cooke City to Gardiner IS kept open all winter. There is a religious group that bought a lot of land near Gardiner.
Can't-stop-listening good, surprising, great audio performance.
I was expecting the good and bad guys to predictably finish out the book. I was wrong! Lots of twists and turns.
I LOVE this guy. Wish he had more books that I could listen to. I think this is one of the best audio books that I have listened to thanks in large part to his reading performance.
Hang on -- it's going to be a bumpy ride!
The audio performance was great. The story line kept me on the edge of my seat -- so much so that I was looking for excuses to get to my study and listen to the book. I have had to rewind to catch up on previous Audible's that I have had lukewarm interest. Not in this case. I couldn't wait to hear what happened next. One of the best audio books that I have listened to.
Yes, great story!!!
all of it
did a great job all the way around, brought the characters to life!!
The Highway Is Not As Safe As You Think
Wish I would of known this book was book #2 in a series, but didn't miss anything with out reading the first book!!
Definitely a story of dark and scary subject matter and a surprising twist that bummed me out - but with that said this story held my attention from beginning to end and the narrator was excellent. I'm not going to say much because this is one book a reader needs to go into without any preconceived ideas.Being a female who travels by herself and lives behind unlocked doors, I have to admit I think I need to sleep with my flare gun close at hand - or something. Makes one think about the creeps out there in or world. CJ Box is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers but I think the next thing I download needs to be some happy chic lit book. I'll need to beef up my "feel safe" attitude after this one. I would have give the book a 5 star across the board except the story took me a bit past my comfort level but it doesn't mean it will take you that close.
The narrator and the story were well matched. Many surprises some not to my liking but consistent within the story line. I don't want to spoil the story so I give no details but I listened non stop. Now I will listen again.
Cody is my favorite. but.......
I like his change in tone for various characters. strong females don't sound like guys in drag.
