Publisher's summary
Now, 10 years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant. Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, which had been the family home of his ex-wife, Susan Stanhope Sutter, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan, who has also returned to Long Island.
But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer - Susan Sutter.
At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces, old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal.
In The Gate House, a book that is both a sequel to The Gold Coast as well as a suspenseful stand-alone novel, acclaimed author Nelson DeMille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore - a place where past, present, and future collide with often unexpected results.

DeMille writes another excellent book!
The Gate House is the sequel to The Gold Coast. The Gold Coast has a huge fan base and the readers wanted more. DeMille delivers a great sequel (18 years after the publication of The Gold Coast).
Do not read this book before you have read The Gold Coast. It is not good as a stand-alone novel. I believe that the current neutral CUSTOMER RATING is because the book was either read out of sequence, or the reader expected that the genre was like most of DeMille's other books, which are fast pace espionage/thrillers.
The Gate House story is set 10 years after The Gold Coast and just after 9/11 (fall of New York's Twin Towers). The main character John Sutter, is still the witty and sarcastic wiseass with big brass balls. Lots of laughs and erotic sex scenes.
As a sequel which picks up 10 years later, DeMille writes more dramatic fiction to build the lives of the characters, so reasonably, the pace of the book is not always a high tension thriller. That said, I could not put this book down.
The reader Christian Rummel voice and style was a great choice for both these books. I especially liked his women's society voices as well as John Sutter the WASP lawyer.
Although I am a big fan of the narrator Scott Brick (who reads many of DeMille's Books) his style and voice would not be suited to these two books.

Brilliant Conclusion to Gold Coast
Many have complained the book is too long and contains rhetoric not useful to the story. They claim to have been bored.
I was sorry the book ended. It is a full and complete review of the pertinent aspects of Gold Coast. It reviews and expands our understanding of all the characters as well as the Gold Coast mentality.
I feel this book is better constructed and nuanced than Gold Coast. This is a terrific listen and the narrator is in a class by himself.

Please Come Back to Us
I have to agree with the majority of the reviewers here. DeMille is one of my absolute FAVORITE authors and I rush to get his latest book as soon as it's published.
But I found this book pedantic and sophomoric. The charming cockiness and "wise cracking" Sutter in the Gold Coast has become boring, shallow and predictable. I wanted so badly to like the story, the characters and the dialogue, but I just couldn't. And I stayed with it until the bitter end. I listened to the interview with the author at the end and he seems to attribute the happiness in the plot line and characters to his life, with a new baby and a happy marriage. I'd give a lot to have the depth back of some of his earlier characters. He says we should expect the sequel to The Lions Game next -- which I loved -- read it once and listened to it twice -- I'll have my fingers crossed that John Cory doesn't suffer the same fate...

Two books in one
"The Gold Coast" and "The Gate House" are two halves of one story. I read "The Gold Coast" first, but it is not necessary since that story is completely retold in flashbacks during the first half of "The Gate House." Present again are John and Susan Sutter; reunited at the funeral of an old family servant. Present also, is Anthony Bellarosa, son of the Mafia Don, Frank Belarosa. In &"The Gold Coast", Susan had killed Frank Bellarosa, her lover, in a fit of spurned passion. John and Susan still have feelings for each other but the menace of Anthony's vendetta darkens their reunion. Antipathy of in-laws commanding the considerable leverage of their hundred million dollar estate is a counterpoint to the physical peril they face from the Mafia prince. This is another very good read from a master story teller.

22 hours of sheer agony
Demille fan but this was agony to listen. If I heard it once I heard it it a hundred times "my wife killed a mafia don." The whole novel is tedious and redundant. A total waste of time.

Better than The Gold Coast
I enjoyed The Gold Coast but didn't think it lived up to the expectations I had for it based on reviews and the recommendations of friends. But I loved the characters and didn't hesitate to spend two credits for The Gate House (although I'm not buying Audible's rationale for charging the extra credit). The 22 or so hours I spent listening to The Gate House whizzed on by. I had one of the story twists figured out about halfway through but I missed my guess on another. John and Susan were much more likable in this sequel and we discover that Anthony fell a little further from the tree than we might have expected. I'm also becoming a fan of Christian Rummel and might consider listening to a book simply because of his narration. He makes it easy for listeners to figure out who's talking and we make the connection almost automatically. Definitely in the top 10 percent of my Audible.com listens.

Groannnnnnnnnnnnnn
Do Not - I repeat: "Do Not Waste a credit on this book." Approx 85% of the book was a rehash of the original Gold Coast. Virtually no plot. Shallow characters. I gave the Gold Coast a better review primarily because it was not my preferred genre and I gave it the "benefit of the doubt." This sequel was the biggest disappointment in audiobooks that I've ever experienced. DeMille should stick to the genre in which he IS good at: Action, adventure, espionage, intrigue and quit trying to write a "dime romance novel." Again, DO NOT WASTE A CREDIT. The book was awful.

Avoid this one.
As stated by other reviewers, I expected better. Other DeMille books have kept me sitting in the car. You know what I mean. You get to your destination, finish your run, whatever. And you can't stop listening. This one was a big big disappointment, all the way to the end. I kept thinking something interesting would materialize. Never did. Skip this one.

DeMille should leave writing trashy romance novels
to Danielle Steele and Nora Roberts. They are much better at it than he. The Gold Coast and The Gate House are both very disappointing. I am a big fan of Nelson DeMille, but not of these two books,

Disappointing........
Having read or listened to all of Nelson DeMille's books I was anxious to start this one. No action, no suspense - very disappointing. My husband and I have been trudging through this hoping that the excitement would begin - well, we are now just about at the end and nothing has happened. Sorry - I really cannot recommend this story. We will finish it - I can't say that I haven't gotten involved with the characters and I certainly got many smiles from the conversation - but I just can't suggest that anyone grab this one up!
