Publisher's summary

In this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller, after taking on a foreclosure case, defense attorney Mickey Haller fights to prove his client’s innocence—but first he must follow a trail of black market evidence to its sinister end

Mickey Haller has fallen on tough times. He expands his business into foreclosure defense, only to see one of his clients accused of killing the banker she blames for trying to take away her home.

Mickey puts his team into high gear to exonerate Lisa Trammel, even though the evidence and his own suspicions tell him his client is guilty. Soon after he learns that the victim had black market dealings of his own, Haller is assaulted, too—and he's certain he's on the right trail.

Despite the danger and uncertainty, Haller mounts the best defense of his career in a trial where the last surprise comes after the verdict is in. Connelly proves again why he "may very well be the best novelist working in the United States today" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Good Story - Poor Performance

Michael Connelly has a distinctive style of writing, which I have enjoyed through the Lincoln Lawyer series as well as Bosch. I find it that much more difficult due to this fact to have to sit through such a mediocre performance by Peter Giles. At first, Giles tries to provide some distinction from one character to another, but then seems to stop trying almost altogether. At some points during several conversations, I can't tell which character is supposed to be speaking. Giles never alters his cadence, so it seems like the characters are reading from a book when they are supposed to be talking (emotionally) about a topic. I made it through the book, but will really be wary about sitting through another story told by someone who just didn't do the story justice.

Enjoyable

Learned alot about court proceedings of both defense and offense and how lawyers use information for their side. There's justice and then there's the law.

Exciting book

I do enjoy the twists and turns of Michael Haller books, especially the endings, because you never know what will happen. I did not like the ending of this one. Seemed silly, have this grown man look up at ballon’s so she could smash him in the head. But I’m not the writer. I enjoyed ever other sentence of the book, except that ending.

Never what they seem

It amazes me the number of twists and turns Connelly takes in his Haller series. I’ve come to enjoy Haller even more than Bosch as he’s more vulnerable ans has room to evolve.
