Publisher's summary

In this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller, after taking on a foreclosure case, defense attorney Mickey Haller fights to prove his client’s innocence—but first he must follow a trail of black market evidence to its sinister end

Mickey Haller has fallen on tough times. He expands his business into foreclosure defense, only to see one of his clients accused of killing the banker she blames for trying to take away her home.

Mickey puts his team into high gear to exonerate Lisa Trammel, even though the evidence and his own suspicions tell him his client is guilty. Soon after he learns that the victim had black market dealings of his own, Haller is assaulted, too—and he's certain he's on the right trail.

Despite the danger and uncertainty, Haller mounts the best defense of his career in a trial where the last surprise comes after the verdict is in. Connelly proves again why he "may very well be the best novelist working in the United States today" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Great read but the story gets bogged down a bit

The narrator got into the Duke Nukem mode a couple of times but thankfully he snapped out of it.

Story so intelligent with such an expert reading

I loved this 'legal fiction' with a focus on the foreclosure 'industry' and related siituations many have faced. Hopefully you're familiar with Michael Connelly and the Mickey Haller books - I'd take them in order - and they're all great on audiobook. Every character has depth and personality. The scene changes with refreshing regularity. The 'unique legal process' is also laid out so a layman can follow without any trouble and without feeling talked down to. Michael Connelly is really focused and evolving the Haller character in interesting ways - (I'm behind the curve on these and have to catch up with newer works too.) Just had to review this now - it's superb writing and superb delivery with Peter Giles.

Super

Many “edge of your seat” moments in this book. A court case at its most riveting.

A good listen - not great, but good

Not one of Michael Connelly’s best books, but overall I enjoyed it. It was a little slow starting out, and there was a lot of foreshadowing, but I enjoy Michael Connelly’s writing and characters.

Great courtroom drama with a good twist at the end

The fifth witness is my first real fiction on audio and it has convinced me to continue with this form of "reading". The story itself is gripping and almost in entirety set in a courtroom in LA. The authors description of the trial is detailed, vivid and gripping for the most part and the way the story unfolds keeps you wondering what will happen next for the entire 14 hours. It does slow down in certain parts, and at one point towards the end, you begin to hope the author really has a big twist at the end because he sets you up for it from the start. He does not disappoint. Overall, great writing and great rendition. Very sparse character list and every single one has a place in the story. I will definitely read more by this author. One star less because it did not really blow my mind, but its definitely a gripping "listen"!

Some nice twists

Enjoyed this book. I've been reading all of Bosch and Lincoln lawyer books, and this one didn't disappoint. I thought it went well, the reader does a good job, and I like the way I'm rolled out in the end. Enjoy.

A decent listen

The narrator is a bit slow. So during the slower parts of the book the mind wanders. But still a good listen, even if a bit far fetched.
