Publisher's summary

The Denver Post hails Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire mystery series as a must-read. Joining the four previous novels - all of which have been Book Sense picks - The Dark Horse puts a unique Wyoming twist on the classic British village mystery.

Sheriff Longmire investigates when his instincts tell him something isn't right about a prisoner accused of killing her husband. Wade Barsad, a man with a dubious past, locked his wife's horses in their barn and burned the animals alive. In return, Mary shot Wade in the head six times - or so the story goes. Walt doesn't believe Mary's confession, and he's determined to dig deeper. Posing as an insurance claims investigator, Walt soon discovers other people who might have wanted Wade dead, including a beautiful Guatemalan bartender and a rancher with a taste for liquor, but not for honesty.

The Dark Horse is sure to build on the success of Another Man's Moccasins as Sheriff Longmire unpins his star and ventures into a town without pity to save a woman without hope.

worth the read

I enjoyed this book but was really annoyed by the backwards time order of the story. Each chapter was a few days earlier. It made the story confusing and I couldn't find any reason for it. I don't think it improved the story and was irritating. It seemed like the author was looking for a new technique and tried to fit it into this story. Other than that, it was an interesting story and it is worth reading.

Great characters, excellent plot.

Nice job by the narrator with many different voices. Walt under cover and tougher than ever.

Another great book

Treat yourself to this one sooner rather than later. Now I'm on to the next Longmire novel.

Dark Horse Shines

What did you like best about this story?

The main character. He was someone you wanted to know, to have over for dinner. He was warm and yet you knew he's the guy you'd want on your side in a dark alley.

Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I am looking forward to other books by this performer

Just as good as the previous titles in the Series!

First of all, I love the narrator, George Guidall. He could almost make any story sound good, but when you add such good writing by Craig Johnson to his narration, it can’t be anything but good.

I loved the part about the Dark Horse and Longmire which you will enjoy in the last third of the book.

You will not be disappointed in this Longmire story. I hope he keeps writing them.

New to me

This was my first time with a Walt Longmire book. It's a little outside the sort of stuff I usually buy, but I'm glad I got it. I thought the storytelling was vivid and exciting, especially towards the climax of the book. Makes me want to listen to more by this author.

Love the story, love the narration!

The story in each of these books is so interesting. They are all so different. The characters are amazing. Each person is so well developed, I can picture them. Guidell's narration is perfect. I hate when a book is finished. I just want it to go on and on.

Doubtful

I do not think that a person with a broken foot could ride a horse. And I skipped ahead over a lot of descriptions of dying horses.
