Publisher's summary

Published under a pseudonym, J. K. Rowling’s brilliant debut mystery introduces Detective Cormoran Strike as he investigates a supermodel's suicide in “one of the best books of the year” (USA Today).

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, creditors are calling, and after a breakup with his longtime girlfriend, he’s living in his office.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry - known to her friends as the Cuckoo - famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this.

Fast-paced and sharply drawn, this dazzling detective novel inspired Strike, the BBC crime drama series that has captivated millions of viewers worldwide.

Warning: will cause a fierce attachment to fictional characters and an inability to press pause
"The Cuckoo’s Calling is a masterfully written gritty detective story that hooks you and refuses to let go until its pulse-pounding conclusion. J. K. Rowling (writing under a pseudonym) shows off her literary range in this compelling thriller. The only good thing about finishing this one is the three more equally unpauseable Cormoran Strike thrillers that are ready to listen to and get lost in."

Bad reviews were WRONG!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would recommend. This is a good suspense and mystery novel. It's kept me entertained and wanting more after every chapter. Where most books you know what the ending is going to be before the actual end of the book. I didn't until the author revealed it. I wish there was a sequel.

Painfully detailed but worth the tenacity.

At first I fought it; then I gave in and thought that the storey was ending too soon. The patience was the facts that solves t h e murder.

jk Rowling :-)

What made the experience of listening to The Cuckoo's Calling the most enjoyable?

A page turner of a story, w compelling characters straight from PEOPLE magazine. This is a relaxing read/breach book, not a thinking book.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters become your friends, you can help but root for them.

Any additional comments?

Gets a little predictable towards the end, but still a fun, light read that is very engaging.

It was THAT good.

Who doesn't love an underdog, especially when it's a down on his luck private detective with shabby offices, a big case, and a "girl-Friday" without whom he couldn't do?

Really hoping this is the first in a series. (and just found out it is!)

Liked the characters, the writing style, and nice to read a modern British detective story instead of another American one set in LA, NY, etc.

If you like following along with the detective as he sifts through the events in search of clues and truths, this novel should be enjoyable for you.

Narrator was very good in the Audible version. Nice job on the different characters.

very well done. did not want to stop the book.

What made the experience of listening to The Cuckoo's Calling the most enjoyable?

fast pace, not standard who done it. she showed us again she can write a good story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Cuckoo's Calling?

the ending I did not have the right bad guy. dag- nag-it. lol.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

dress it up. lol. and get some glam.

Any additional comments?

PLEASE drop the early lines from other books. it throw the books off.

Wonderfully absorbing with deeply drawn characters

Would you listen to The Cuckoo's Calling again? Why?

Yes - in fact, I immediately started the book over again and listened a 2nd time before writing this review. This was one of those deceptively subtle books with such nuanced characters and situations that demand at least another go. Immediately. What I particularly liked was it felt like the activities in the book simply unfolded. The pacing was expertly balanced - not too slow, though at times I was so eager to hear more, and never too fast.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Cormoran Strike and Robin. Both of them offered far more depth than was written here.

Which scene was your favorite?

If forced to choose, I'd say when Robin tells Strike about his former girlfriend.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Oddly, now that I think about it, although I wouldn't say Cuckoo is funny, there were times I snorted or laughed out loud.

Any additional comments?

Ha! I only just found out Cuckoo is labeled a "crime" novel. My first!

Extremely well written.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Excellent detective novel. Highly literate and thoroughly engaging.

What did you like best about this story?

Fascinating plot & appealing protagonists.

Any additional comments?

Somewhere in the course of 7 Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowing learned how to wright. This is a first class mystery novel that compares favorably to the works of P.D. James.

A good detective novel!

Where does The Cuckoo's Calling rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's somewhere in the middle, not so much because of the plot, as for the main character. I liked him!

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Unfortunately I was not surprised... Being a huge fan of detective novels and mostly of the Dame Agatha, I think I've spoiled all my detective stories.. my brain is very suspicious!

Which scene was your favorite?

Hmm.. can't say without spoilers I think. I liked the scenes btw Strike and Robin. I think the scene at the boutique was among my favs.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nope, no extreme reaction.
