Publisher's summary

Introducing Wyoming's Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting novel from the New York Times best-selling author of Dry Bones, the first in the Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix original series Longmire.

Fans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr, and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times best-selling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming's Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, full of memorable characters. After 25 years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire's hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.

With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

Welcome to Wyoming

CraigJohson has crafted a believable story of the area near Sheridan and Buffalo Wyoming. The characters are authentic representations of the area. The plot is suspenseful. The narrator's voice captures the characters perfectly. Life is not always a pretty story.

People's personalities and their lives.

What made the experience of listening to The Cold Dish the most enjoyable?

People's relationships in the story.

What other book might you compare The Cold Dish to and why?

I don't know.

What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator's pace of conversation add so much more the characters personality I don't think you would get if you just read the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This one didn't hold my interest to "not put down" like some of the author's other books.

Any additional comments?

Can't wait to listen to another on of his!

Delightful Characters Good Book

I'm not usually a huge George Guidall fan, but he is perfect in this story. I thought the story was delightful and provided some interesting twists and turns. Loved the dialogue-without- contractions. Fun stuff. I am recommending to everyone - especially all the wannabe Marlboro men I know. I will definitely look for more from this narrator/author combination.

Even better!

I've been a fan of the Longmire television series, but the book is even better.
There's breathtaking descriptive writing, and wonderful impressionist passages, that just can't be in the televised work. (I must say that Robert Taylor was very well cast as Walt Longmire, and Craig Johnson is surely pleased with that.) The criticism I have of the book is the same I have of the filmed series -- plot more than a little over the top -- too ready to go for the cheap thrills. Heck, it could be the finest literary fiction. I imagine this is a conscious choice, however, for understandable reasons....

A wonderful start

This is the first book of the series and I guarantee you will get hooked! Abseroka county is where I want to live, the characters are fun and well fleshed out!

The story follows Walt Longmire, a recent widow and the sheriff of Abseroka county, as he attempts to solve the murder of a young man. A young man involved in a dark and upsetting case Walt handled a few years before. Walt with the help of Henry Standing bear (his best friend), Vic (his sassy undersherrif) and many other characters you'll fall in love with.

I got into this series by listening to "death without company" after I finished that I bought this right away! I can't get enough

A ver good, very entertaining book!

I was turned on to this series by a friend who happens to be an avid reader. I had seen parts of the TV series, and it was OK but not my favorite. This book is leaps and bounds ahead of it. The wit and banter will easily have me coming back for more. Um hum, it is so...
