Publisher's summary

Introducing Wyoming's Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting novel from the New York Times best-selling author of Dry Bones, the first in the Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix original series Longmire.

Fans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr, and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times best-selling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming's Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, full of memorable characters. After 25 years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire's hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.

With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

Longmire Revives the Western Hero!

As a long time fan of the Western genre, from Glen Ford to Gary Cooper to James Stewart to Clint Eastwood, I can testify that Walt Longmire fills a void desperately left open by today's standard of a hero. With incredible descriptions of the Wyoming landscape, colorful descriptions of the local inhabitants of Durant and possibly the best possible com padre in Henry Standing Bear, these are stories I listen to over and over again. I first came to appreciate George Guidall while listening to The Dark Tower series, and he only gets better as the voice of Longmire! Well done Mr. Johnson, I'd like to buy you a Rainier!

Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I first book I listened to by George Guidall was Hard Country. It was a five star performance, which led to to this book.Guidall has the perfect voice for the west, gritty, tough, very good nuance.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but I'm glad I couldn't. I really enjoyed every hour.

Any additional comments?

Great Reader!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Cold Dish to be better than the print version?

The story would stand on its own as a read, but the reader for the story is perfect for an added dimension.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Henry, again the interpretation the reader does of voice and speech cadence adds greatly to the story.

Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not, but now will do so.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!!

Any additional comments?

I am a fan of the TV show based on these books, which is why I originally purchased this book, I am now a fan of Craig Johnson and George Guidall and can't wait to listen to more!!

Familiar, yet different and delightful!

Discovered Longmire on Netflix: now rediscovering him in "print". Guidall is a perfect choice for narrator. Hungry for more!

Great Story, Even Better Narration

Would you consider the audio edition of The Cold Dish to be better than the print version?

This was my first encounter with Craig Johnson. It will not be the last. I enjoyed this from beginning to end. I haven't read any of the print versions but will definitely add the author to my list.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked many of the characters. Sheriff Walt and Henry Standing Bear are both good. They seem like they could be real people. They reflect characteristics that make them endearing and aggravating at the same time. The long-standing relationship between the men adds to the story.

What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?

George Guidall made this listening experience super. He was excellent. You never have to wonder which character is speaking. His voices for the characters brought them to life and gave them added depth.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to this over Thanksgiving weekend. I really wanted to tell family and friends to leave me alone. Obviously that didn't happen so I had to listen to some parts twice. I didn't want to miss anything.

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story was good. The "who done it" wasn't obvious. I was as much interested in the characters as the mystery. I can't say enough good things about George Guidall. A bad or mediocre narrator can ruin a good book. He made a good book a great listen!
