Editorial reviews

Feisty felines take center stage in author Leann Sweeney's second installment of the Cats in Trouble series. Coffee-sipping cat lover Jillian Hart finds herself caught up in a murder investigation when a local professor's corpse is discovered along with 50 stray felines. Veteran performer Vanessa Johansson brings warmth and compassion to this story of friendship, intrigue, and adorable kitty capers. Johansson's experience voicing animated characters plays well with the quirky, light-hearted good humor of Sweeney's self-described "gentle mystery". Hart's small-town life is colored by compelling relationships with oddball characters, sure to captivate and enchant listeners.

Publisher's summary

Between her kitty quilt-making business and her three beloved cats, Jill has her hands full. That doesn't stop her from wanting to solve the mystery of the milk cow that's gone missing from her friend's farm. But imagine her surprise when a stolen cow leads to the discovery of 50 stray cats and one dead body - a victim of cold-blooded murder....

Quit -- couldn't stand the narrator.

Odd book. I genuinely enjoyed most of the first half of this book -- good story, interesting characters. Even from the beginning, the narrator sounded too young to me, for a protagonist who was supposed to be a widow with a 29 year old stepdaughter, but I was willing to go with it. For awhile.

But about half way through, something happened. The narrator spun out of control. She began reading in a very clipped and emphatic way, emphasizing odd words here and there, making it a sing-song chronicle, and I started getting sea sick. I couldn't follow the story anymore -- all I could do was hang on this odd cadence the narrator was setting up. Her voice would go up.... then down... and all I could do was wait to hear what next odd word she'd emphasize.

The story got a little out of control too, I think. It seems to suddenly explode with new characters, more complicated situations, way too complex for what had started out to be a nice little tale... but I admit I'm not at all sure about that. I backtracked two hours, three different times, trying to stick with the story, but finally gave up.

Now I'm disgusted because I also bought another book by this author, and now I see that Miss Johansson narrates this one too. Hate it when that happens...

I Continue To Be Impressed By This Series

At first when I started this series, I didn't expect much. Just some cute stories about cats, and oh by the way, a murder mystery thrown in there, was my expectation. But no, it's actually just the opposite. Very compelling murder mystery stories that oh by the way just happen to feature cats and a cat loving woman.

I'm definitely hooked and look forward to listening to the other books in the series.

Cozy lovers rejoice!!

Tried the book on a whim and was delighted-- a well-written story with engaging characters (including cats!) intriguing plot, and...clean language! The narrator has a distinctive style that grew on me. Thank you, Leann Sweeney!

Get another narrator

The story was OK. Interesting plot and story line. Narrator was so grating I felt like quitting several times during the book. Her voice of Candace the police officer was so bad it made me gnash you teeth. With a better narrator story would have been more enjoyable.

Dreadful

Narrator drones on. Story just does not capture my interest. Ended up returning it half way through.

Not just for cat lovers

The idea of a series revolving around cats is a bit odd to me. However, the mystery is sound and the characters are likeable. I enjoyed this book and will listen to the next one.

Narrator ruined book for me

Before you buy this book listen to the audio sample. This narrator's voice is high pitched and to me very annoying. Like listening to a little girl read. Simply could not get past her voice to enjoy or not enjoy the book. Definitely not my cup of tea.
