Publisher's Summary

FBI Special agent Brad Raines is facing his toughest case yet. A Denver serial killer has killed four beautiful young women, leaving a bridal veil at each crime scene, and he's picking up his pace. Unable to crack the case, Raines appeals for help from a most unusual source: residents of the Center for Wellbeing and Intelligence, a private psychiatric institution for mentally ill individuals whose are extraordinarily gifted.

It's there that he meets Paradise, a young woman who witnessed her father murder her family and barely escaped his hand. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, Paradise may also have an extrasensory gift: the ability to experience the final moments of a person's life when she touches the dead body.

In a desperate attempt to find the killer, Raines enlists Paradise's help. In an effort to win her trust, he befriends this strange young woman and begins to see in her qualities that most 'sane people' sorely lack. Gradually, he starts to question whether sanity resides outside the hospital walls...or inside.

As the Bride Collector picks up the pace--and volume--of his gruesome crucifixions, the case becomes even more personal to Raines when his friend and colleague, a beautiful young forensic psychologist, becomes the Bride Collector's next target.

The FBI believes that the killer plans to murder seven women. Can Paradise help before it's too late?

"Terrible! Started OK, but went steeply downhill."
What would have made The Bride Collector better?

I don't know - a rewrite or better editing? It didn't make good sense to me and seemed disjointed. I never abandon a book once I start, even the really bad ones get finished. This one was almost a rare exception, I really couldn't stand it by the end.

What was most disappointing about Ted Dekker’s story?

For me the religious overtones and subject matter just didn't click. It came across as artificial and creepy - especially in the last 100 pages.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator was fine. It was really the characters' literary voices that I found grating.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Bride Collector?

Honestly, it would be hard for me to know where to begin. The presentation of the protagonist wanting to "save" the (as described) virginal heroine just came across as creepy and unrelateable. If I wanted to read a bad, pulpy romance novel - I would have chosen one of those.

    Any additional comments?

Maybe it just wasn't a good fit for my literary likes? I don't know, but I wouldn't buy anything written by this author again.

    "Weak story; weak characters"
What would have made The Bride Collector better?

Stronger main characters; less soul-searching self-analysis of the characters. The first half of part 1 was decent; the second half of part 1 began to wane. It just got worse with part 2. My husband and I were in the car traveling and it made the trip seem to last forever. It was an unbelievable storyline and has to have one of the dumbest and least capable FBI agents I've ever encountered in a book; not a likable lead character.

Has The Bride Collector turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not from this genre because mystery/thrillers are my favorite. However, this is my first book by Ted Dekker. Since almost all other reviews thought this was a great book from the author, I assume this is representative of his work. We won't be getting any more of his books.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

    Narrator was fine.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment, boredom and "seriously?"

What is the term for worse than awful? I had high hopes for this book given the reviews. The plot was inspired but the execution was just plain bad. By the end of the book I wanted to kill them all off!

    "The Bride Collector"

THE ABSOLUTELY WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER DOWNLOADED FROM AUDIBLE!!!! The writing is terrible, none of the characters are likable and the person who is reading the book is awful. It is torture to listen to, and I have chosen not to finish the book. I really gave it a try. Don't waste your money or your time. If I could give it less than one star I would.

"It wasn't bad but i wish I hadn't bought it"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who is very wrapped up in murder mysteries and don't really think about the book content.

Would you be willing to try another book from Ted Dekker? Why or why not?

Probably not - not a good impression. If I did, it'd be through the library and I couldn't find anything else

Which character – as performed by John Glover – was your favorite?

    They were all blasé

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Bride Collector?

Hard to say - wasn't that attention getting

"IMPROBABLE. BUT THIS IS FICTION. GOOD BOOK"
Would you listen to The Bride Collector again? Why?

I PROBABLY WILL. IT WAS VERY TENSE AT TIMES. THE FIRST HALF WAS NOT THAT GOOD BUT THE SECOND PART WAS GREAT.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

IN THE SECOND HALF. TENSION GALORE.

Which character – as performed by John Glover – was your favorite?

ROWDY. BUT THEY WERE ALL DONE WELL.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

THE WHOLE SECOND HALF WAS ENTERTAINING.

    Any additional comments?

OFTEN WHEN READING WE LOOK FOR THE PROBABLE EVEN IN FICTION.

THIS BOOK IS NOT PROBABLE. BUT I LIKED THE BOOK VERY MUCH.

    "Don't waste your money"

I have never listened to such a piece of crap. Completely unbelievable and mind-numbingly repetitive. Waaaay too many characters, some of whom do nothing at all. Coulda been great--creepy villain, inventive way of killing--but just totally illogical actions and dialogue of and between characters. I will NEVER listen to anything else by Dekker.

    "Not for me!"

I have read and listen to a few different Ted Dekker books and they are not my type. They start out good and plausible then spin out to fantasy land. They turn into a religious/higher being books. The books go from a believable book to a, you must believe in a higher power, blind faith book. I personally like realistic fiction books, not fantasy books. If it wasn't for the mentally-ill characters in The Bride Collector, I would not have been able to finish listening to this book. I don’t believe I will be reading or listening to any more of Ted Dekker’s work.

    "Terrible Book and Gruesome"

I agree with Betty & Kerry. It is poorly written and poorly read. Don't waste you money unless you like gruesome scenes.
