Publisher's summary

When an LAPD narcotics officer is found with a fatal bullet wound and a suicide note, Detective Harry Bosch follows a bloody trail of drug murders across the Mexico border.

Working on the case, LAPD detective Harry Bosch is reminded of the primal police rule he learned long ago: Don't look for the facts, but the glue that holds them together. Soon Harry's making some very dangerous connections, starting with a dead cop and leading to a bloody string of murders that wind from Hollywood Boulevard to the back alleys south of the border. Now this battle-scarred veteran will find himself in the center of a complex and deadly game - one in which he may be the next and likeliest victim.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

Hill Wrong Narrator for Bosch

Dick Hill is extremely talented, but he's the wrong narrator for this series. And I kinda hate when he does his female voice--especially in a romantic-type setting. Also, he makes Bosch sound old and a little weak. Whereas Titus gives us the bada-- Bosch we're used to seeing on the series.

The story itself is fantastic--though it wasn't as engrossing as the other Bosch books. Connelly puts out quality work, and I'm glad he hasn't gotten lazy with the Bosch series. This has got to be the ninth or tenth Bosch book I've listened to, and they're consistently great. With this one, though, there was just didn't seem to be as much character or plot development---at least, not enough to grab my attention like the others have. I found myself five hours in and not really caring what happened. In fact, I can't even remember if I finished this book.

I'll keep listening though.

I may repurchase this book if Titus narrates it. For now, I'm done listening to Bosch as he is depicted by Dick Hill.

No expectation is left dangling.

This is classic Conway. A creative plot with a twist, well developed characters and a slightly different than expected outcome.
Dick Hill is one of the best narrators ever in the audiobook field.

good book

start: 07/14/2022, finish: 07/18/2022

Book 2 of Harry Bosch. I liked the story line. I'm trying to determine if I liked Titus Welliver's narration (Book 1), or Dick Hill.

The Black Ice

Ultimately, a good story with a satisfying ending. Thought it was a little slower than The Black Echo. That said, as written by Michael Connolly, it was much better than most of the genre. Mr Connolly is an excellent writer and his analogies go a long way for the reader to “see” and understand the story as it unfolds.

I was a big fan of the TV series and Titus Welliver narrated the copy of The Black Echo I purchased. Definitely added to the experience. Mr Hill’s narration was not acceptable but I did not care for his voices for the women characters.

Now, on to book 3 in the series.

Harry Bosch is a great series detective!

What made the experience of listening to The Black Ice: Harry Bosch Series, Book 2 the most enjoyable?

Dick Hill is a wonderful Voice actor. His depth and breadth of characters is wide ranging and he is as engaging as he is entertaining.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

This particular novel borrows heavily from Dashiell Hammett's work. So, I saw some of the plot twists coming in advance, but the story is paced well and Bosh is a very engaging character. So, even though the foreshadowing is a bit transparent, the conclusion is still satisfying.

What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?

As I said, Hill is a really great actor. I also enjoyed the production. Segments of phone conversation for instance sound much different than one on one dialogue. I appreciate the effort to build the scenes and the characters. Hill's natural delivery is spot on, with enough gravel and grit to embody the surly detective, while also being able to produce multiple, believable characters of varying backgrounds and genders.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. Certainly you will want to keep pushing, but with a long run time, I wanted to spread my listening sessions out.

The Black Ice

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The character Harry Bosch has become one of my favorites. The story line takes many twists and keeps one guessing right to the end. The plot of the story leverages modern criminal drug trade with the politics of law enforcement and a detective that does the right thing even when its against the rules.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the character Harry Bosch, irreverent and unafraid; he get it done.

What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?

Wonderful transitions between characters. Dick brings each character to life by giving them their own personalities.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I just enjoy a good mystery
