Editorial reviews

Editors Select, March 2014 - I recognized The Atlantis Gene from the Kindle bestsellers list, and was delighted to learn that it was coming to audio. A.G. Riddle has written a thrilling and unusual story about the history of human origins, which seamlessly blends in Nazis, aliens, religion, autism, evolution, and Atlantis. I found this to be incredibly accessible, exciting, and original listen – A.G. Riddle is definitely an author to try if you like Dan Brown or Michael Crichton. Narrator Stephen bel Davies helped ensured I was hooked right away, and can’t wait to sink my teeth into the next book in the The Origin Mystery series. —Sarah, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

The greatest mystery of all time...the history of human origins...will be revealed.

Seventy thousand years ago, the human race almost went extinct. We survived, but no one knows how.

Until now.

The countdown to the next stage of human evolution is about to begin, and humanity might not survive this time.

The Immari are good at keeping secrets. For 2,000 years, they've hidden the truth about human evolution. They've also searched for an ancient enemy - a threat that could wipe out the human race. Now the search is over.

Off the coast of Antarctica, a research vessel discovers a mysterious structure buried deep in an iceberg. It has been there for thousands of years, and something is guarding it. As the Immari rush to execute their plan, a brilliant geneticist makes a discovery that could change everything.

Dr. Kate Warner moved to Jakarta, Indonesia to escape her past. She hasn't recovered from what happened to her, but she has made an incredible breakthrough: a cure for autism. Or so she thinks. What she has found is far more dangerous - for her and the entire human race. Her work could be the key to the next stage of human evolution. In the hands of the Immari, it would mean the end of humanity as we know it.

Agent David Vale has spent 10 years trying to stop the Immari. Now he's out of time. His informant is dead. His organization has been infiltrated. His enemy is hunting him. But when David receives a coded message related to the Immari attack, he risks everything to save the one person that can help him solve it: Dr. Kate Warner.

Together, Kate and David must race to unravel a global conspiracy and learn the truth about the Atlantis Gene...and human origins. Their journey takes them to the far corners of the globe and into the secrets of their pasts. The Immari are close on their heels and will stop at nothing to obtain Kate's research and force the next stage of human evolution - even if it means killing 99.9% of the world's population. David and Kate can stop them...if they can trust each other. And stay alive.

The writer seemed very scattered

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Na, I think I would spare them from reading this one.

Has The Atlantis Gene turned you off from other books in this genre?

Nope, it was was good effort but it seems like author didn't have the story planned out. Lots of jumps and missing information.

What about Stephen Bel Davies’s performance did you like?

It was good, but even the greatest reader can't make a average book great.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

yeah because the movie would be better than the book.

SCIENCE fiction: solid story and narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd recommend. Blending of reasonable bioscience with conspiracy, spies, human extinction level events, action all makes for a fun storyline. The narrator is serious, sarcastic, humorous, sad, angry, etc. just like the characters.

What other book might you compare The Atlantis Gene to and why?

It's genes, dna, etc: So Greg Bear's Darwin's Radio springs to mind. What's fact and fiction in the this world of biology, genetics, evolution (or not), outside influences or cover-ups?

Which character – as performed by Stephen Bel Davies – was your favorite?

David Vale - tough, creative, dry-humored intelligence operative, is a strong character anyways. Using good timing and nuanced narration, Stephen Bel Davies makes Vale that much better.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Most of my listening is while running. This book actually had me running (or walking) a little longer & listening in other spare moments.

Jason Bourne meets the X-Files

The book is enjoyable and the story gripped me from the start. Reading this book was like watching a Jason Bourne movie marrying the X-Files. The story is fast paced and moves from one action scene to the next. The main characters are well developed (specially the hero David Vale and the villain Dorian Sloane). Stephen Bel Davis does a great job in reading the novel, he tried to differentiate the characters by changing the intonation. I particularly liked his rendering of Dorian Sloane, a villain I really came to despise (which tells me the writer did a good job in developing this character).

Epic

What made the experience of listening to The Atlantis Gene the most enjoyable?

Complex but not confusing. Easy to follow. Lots of action, unlike many books (especially series), the scenes are not overly described in a tedious manner.

Excellent

I found this to be an excellent read with a supernatural twist. The author spins a believable futuristic tale.

Depressing

Every time you start to understand or like a character they are killed off. No happy ending here for anyone. Gloom and doom! The story is very complex and well written, though some of the science is off. But, I will not continue reading the series due to it's dreary nature.

This is a fun story.

This is a fun, fast paced tale about how people from Atlantis influenced human evolution. The 1st book is better than the 2nd, which goes way out there, and I'm not going to bother with the 3rd, based on the ending of the 2nd, as I was really having a hard time suspending disbelief in the 2nd book.

The bad thing about this series is the narrator. The narrator has such an effeminate manner of talking it really distracted from the story. All of the characters voices sounded feminine and I was constantly surprised believing that a character was a woman until they were referred to as sir, or he. It was confusing. The narrator also tended to up speak, raising his voice at the end of each sentence, making almost each sentence he said sound like a question. Unless the narrator can lose these affectations, I don't think he should be narrating any books. I'll never listen to anything he narrates again.

Reads more like an action movie screenplay

An entertaining fast paced thriller with a interesting science-based theme. Thoroughly enjoyed until near the end when the eye rolling a little too imaginative plot twists were revealed one after another. C'mon really, dude?

Decent story, distracting narrator

The story was entertaining and creative, however the narrators inflection, voices for different characters and overall style were hugely distracting. I might read the other books in the series.l but I wouldn't listen to them with the same narrator.
