John Grisham takes you back to where it all began...

John Grisham's A Time to Kill is one of the most popular novels of our time. Now we return to that famous courthouse in Clanton as Jake Brigance once again finds himself embroiled in a fiercely controversial trial - a trial that will expose old racial tensions and force Ford County to confront its tortured history.

Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier.

The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?

In Sycamore Row, John Grisham returns to the setting and the compelling characters that first established him as America's favorite storyteller. Here, in his most assured and thrilling novel yet, is a powerful testament to the fact that Grisham remains the master of the legal thriller, nearly 25 years after the publication of A Time to Kill.

Featured Article: The Essential John Grisham in Audio

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

Like old times

This is the kind of quality that he used to write. I am glad to see it return. I had read every one of his books up until a few years ago when the quality fell off and became not even worth the free credits. I am so excited that this was great. I wanted so badly to resume being a fan.

A must read!

I loved “A time to Kill” novel & I was NOT disappointed with its“Sycamore Row” sequel! I especially enjoyed the characters developed in the story in explaining the sad/harsh history of the south. Both novels tugged at my heart and moved me.

Would you listen to Sycamore Row again? Why?

Probably. The narrator is great

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sycamore Row?

Finding out the answer to the mystery

Have you listened to any of Michael Beck’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No

Any additional comments?

It felt a little dated, since it took place in the 1980's. At times It seemed like I was listening to an old book, not a recent release.

Another Great Read From Grisham

I thought "A Time To Kill" was one of Grisham's best works. "Sycamore Row" stands tall beside it. Great story, very good performance, and grabs you right to the end.

A great snuggle in and have a listen..

Where does Sycamore Row rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In my top 5 so far

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sycamore Row?

The characters will stay with me for some time. I don't have one particular moment.

Have you listened to any of Michael Beck’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but he was very good! Great pace, wonderful voice!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have I'm sure I would have.

Any additional comments?

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed John Grisham. This was a wonderful story ..though yes slightly predictable as to where the story is going, it's told so well that you don't mind. I did tear up at bit towards the end even though I knew what was coming. It is a fictional work, but even so - it's close enough to humankind's actual history that it hurts to remember and be faced with what we are capable of doing to one another.

Almost his best

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes!!! John Grisham at his best.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sycamore Row?

Too many to list hear.

Which character – as performed by Michael Beck – was your favorite?

Jake, he sounds very close to Jake in the movie.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

My all time favorite book by John Grisham is still A Time to Kill, but Gray Mountain comes in a close second. A small mountain town, slowly dying, and a New York attorney sent to intern there for a year. This type of law she hasn't practiced before; the law in which your clients are right there with and you have to fix their legal problems with them always right their. This is nothing like her New York job. There she made over$100,000. Here she makes nothing, she's an unpaid intern. There the did nothing but read files and pass them on. Here she had to practice family law, and whatever other kind of law they needed, with her client right there with her. Get through the year and go back to New York, easy right? Then an attorney is killed, could she be next? This book was great, wonderful, full of suspense. Read or listen to it as soon as you can.
