Now the subject of the Lifetime original movie: An Amish Murder

A killer is preying on sacred ground....

In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and "English" residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But 16 years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. In the aftermath of the violence, the town was left with a sense of fragility, a loss of innocence.

Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish.

Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as Chief of Police. Her Amish roots and big city law enforcement background make her the perfect candidate. She's certain she's come to terms with her past - until the first body is discovered in a snowy field. Kate vows to stop the killer before he strikes again. But to do so, she must betray both her family and her Amish past - and expose a dark secret that could destroy her.

Critic reviews

"Deeply flawed characters in a distinctive setting make this a crackling good series opener, recommended for fans of T. Jefferson Parker and Robert Ellis, whose books take place in very un-Amish settings but who generate the same kind of chills and suspense." (Booklist)

Too gory for me!

I have liked her books but this one was over the top gory! I hope she toned it down in future books. I like the Amish culture viewpoint!

Violence

I found this graphically violence and at times a bit hard to read. I'm an avid mystery addict so was looking forward to this. Hadn't read anything by Castillo before. Story was good. I didn't really like the sheriff for a long time but she did grow
on me. There are tough women in law enforcement but I felt she was trying to be tougher than she needed to be .... I don't know. Just me, I guess. I will read the sequel and may feel differently.

not what I expeted

overall it was good, with a few decent twists in the plot. maybe I'm squeamish I could have done without some of the torture details.

Listen and watch the story unfold in your mind.

I loved this book. So much action. Just enough details to watch in your minds eye while they tell the story.

I'm sorry.....

I wanted to like it, but this story plays out like a bad made-for-tv movie...predictable....
(Sorry author)Worst narrator for THIS story ever, something else for her may be a better choice.
If she says the word "inordinately" one more time...I may have an inordinately strong dislike for the story. Wish we could rate with 1/2 stars, for 2 1/2 stars is a more appropriate rating.

This was a good read

A perfection narration combined with an edge of seat story had me listening at every opportunity. An interesting look at the Amish and how they fit in with other communities. I’m looking forward to the series now.

This book will really keep you interested and you will not be able to put it down.

Let me just say that I am new to Audible and I am not a big reader. I found this book and started it and fell in love with it. It is based in the state where I live and the Amish north of where I live. I loved everything about this book. This is the first book of a collection so I will definitely be reading the next book. I highly recommend this book and this series as I think it will be awesome. If you do not know about the Amish and their ways and their traditions this will really educate you. The Amish still exist and they have their own society. I cannot wait to get to the next book in the series.

Narrator can’t do male voices

This was a very good story, and the narration was great when it came to the main character. The problem was with every other character. She seems to think that all males speak with a disdainful snarl or petulance. Even the other female voices were either silly sounding or overtly snotty. It seemed that the town was full of spoiled, stupid people who spoke as a stereotypical smart mouthed teenager. I want to get the next book, but I can’t take the same narrator.

Couldn't stop listening. Excellent story, very entertaining. On a level with The Nightingale for entertainment value!

Audible win! I can’t wait for the rest of the series.

Best book I’ve listened to in awhile. The story was quick and interesting. There was never a dull moment. I’m ready for the next book in the series.
