Publisher's summary

No affairs. No criminal connections. No DNA. No clues. Eve Dallas may be the best cop in the city - not to mention having the lavish resources of her husband Roarke at her disposal - but the Swisher case has her baffled. The family members were murdered in their beds with brutal, military precision. The state-of-the-art security was breached, and the killers used night vision to find their way through the cozy middle-class house. Clearly, Dallas is dealing with pros. The only mistake they made was to overlook the nine-year-old girl cowering in the dark in the kitchen...

Now Nixie Swisher is an orphan - and the sole eyewitness to a seemingly inexplicable crime. Kids are not Dallas' strong suit. But Nixie needs a safe place to stay, and Dallas needs to solve this case. Not only because of the promise she made to Nixie. Not only for the cause of justice. But also to put to rest some of her own darkest memories - and deepest fears. With her partner Peabody on the job, and watching her back - and with Roarke providing the kind of help only he can give - Lieutenant Eve Dallas is running after shadows, and dead-set on finding out who's behind them.

Crack another case with Eve Dallas.

JUST AMAZING!!

I truly loved this book!! It was good from the beginning to the end. I finished it in a day lol. I couldn't stop listening to it. JD Robb did an amazing job as well as Susan telling it. Of all the books so far in the series, this one has been my favorite. All of the books are extremely addicting but I loved this one!!!

What did you love best about Survivor in Death?

I loved Eve's relationship with Nixie, she always has a wonderful intuition with kids and they all end up loving and respecting her. I have listened to all the books. This is my favorite. I am crazy for all the regular characters, especially Mavis, Peabody and Somerset.

excellent!!

Everybody is complaining that Eve is nasty and mean to Nixie and everyone. if you have not read the first book or listen to the audibles from the beginning your not going to understand why she's the way she is. Rourke loves her for who she is and understands her completely. Eve's been on her own, had only one friend and no family or true lover to teach and guide her how to be or treat others . She's been married about 2 yrs and Rourke and friends are teaching and guiding her and truly understand her situation. Eve is learning and realizing how to be. People give her a break, it takes time to love and trust others especially knowing what her background was. I love her for who she's become and softening up as the years go by, being around a child is all new to her and makes her feel uncomfortable so she gets mad and doesn't know how to interact, so give her a chance . love ya JD ROBB, your series are magnificent!!!

Great book! Except for the character name mistakes

Female victim name, Keelie Swisher, was narrated as Jenny Swisher. Another female character's name was Jenny Dyson. I presume the narration script was mistyped because Susan Ericksen is one of the best narrators I've had the pleasure of listening to.

Nixie Pixie

I’ve lost count of the times I’ve listened to this book on Audible. After my favorite, and the first book in the series, Naked in Death, it is next in line!

The story is exceptional for so many reasons. The plot is unique with an extra edge that is mind-blowing. The young protagonist Nixie is like none other, the relational build as each character is fleshed out is outstanding and
each is pivotal to the whole.

Once again Susan Ericksen’s brilliant narration is spot on! Each character is recognizable and distinct, and she manages to maintain each singular personality as the story rolls on. She did a fabulous job portraying Nixie Swisher, the 9 year old at the heart of this tragedy. Ericksen is one of the best, if not the best narrator I've come across listening to audiobooks! She is as much a part of this series as Eve, Roarke, Peabody ...... and the whole bullpen.

Despite the grisly crime, an entire family, housekeeper and a school friend having a sleep over having all been murdered in their sleep ...... the humor is non-stop and truly laugh out loud funny.

It has to be because J.D. Robb was so on point with all her one liners and this story is full of them!

In 6 minutes, murder cuts quietly through Nixie Swisher's life and normal gets turned on its head.

A safe house, sealed record and guards were 9 year old Nixie' s future until she crossed paths with the icy kickass lieutenant, Eve Dallas of NYPSD.

The psychopathology of these murdering bastards who have rocked Nixie's world, completely drive this story.

She is pivotal in this rather complex and complicated case that has Eve and team baffled.

Thinking they may be back to finish the job once it gets out that there is an eye witness, Eve takes Nixie back to the spectacular fortress that she, Roarke, Summerset and Galahad call home.

Quite dead to the protestations of the overworked and underpaid CPS drone, Meredith Newman, who well before she is bound, gagged and drugged, behaves like the walking dead ...... pun intended!

Speculation on the who and the why leaves Eve and her network guessing for much of this mystery but she is determined to restore order by putting the bastards in a goddamn cage!

Straight clean kill, no vandalism, no burglary, no sexual assault, torture or mutilation. Just a professional, target specific hit with no suspects, no leads ...... nothing!

Telling Lynnie Dyson's parents, Matt and Jenny Dyson their daughter was murdered was hard but something Eve knew how to so, so she got to it.

The knock on doors yielded little, people saw nothing, knew nothing, heard nothing.

It did yield some very interesting characters that made this story so much more compelling.

Mrs. Gretz, the funny yet crazy as a shit house rat neighbor, with her eyes fixed and her ears tuned is pretty certain "the French" did it.

Hildy, her great niece by marriage saw two men dressed all in black walking down the street around 2:15ish early morning and did not realize they were fresh from the kill of this nice, friendly family with well behaved children.

Jan Unger, a dissatisfied client of Keelie Swisher's who thought the licensed nutritionist a quack had her axe to grind, but she was no stone cold killer.

Eve meets up with a trio of daily door-lurkers, Ramon Pasquale and associates who added yet more color as they witnessed the snatch and grab of Meredith Newman. The poor woman had no idea that her number was up the minute she was called to the Upper West Side home of Grant and Keelie Swisher.

Next Eve talks to Minnie Cable, a funky-junkie and mother of the cute duo, Bits and Lolo. She is a client of Meredith Newman and witnessed the snatch and grab and called it in.

The minute Eve tells Roarke about the CPS snatch and grab and that persons unknown might assume that Nixie is with them and think to grab her, he immediately puts Dochas, his charitable project, a shelter offering a safe place for abused women and children on notice.

When the murdering bastards continue their killing by next turning their eyes to an empty safe house guarded by cops Owen Knight and James Preston, Eve truly loses her shit!!

Dealing with a child, any child is hard for Eve and now that two of her men, personally picked, while protecting and serving the people of NY have gone down in the line of duty! It's all too much!

Thank God for Summerset and Galahad, for helping Nixie to deal with the pain, confusion and grief. With them doing their part, the household is kept on an even keel.

Detective Jannson gives Eve the heads up about a street LC in Booking, making noises about something to do with the cops who got dead on 91st street. And then the funniest dialogue I have ever enjoyed in any of these books ensue between Eve, the incorrigible Ophelia Washburn and the stalwart Peabody.

The best character hands down is Ophelia Washburn, a street LC well past her prime, picked up on West 89th for soliciting without a license, claims she had seen the killers and smelled blood on them.

Top notch investigating and good old fashioned detective work is what finally cracks this case for Eve and restores Nixie's world.

And because Eve keeps promises, she does show Nixie the murdering bastard who slaughtered her family.

Each book is so good it inspires fierce devotion amongst In Death lovers. This is quality writing, real interactive dialogue and frankly defies genre labeling.

Supposedly, there are similar books out there, but I have yet to find one that rivals the In Death series.

These books are a wonderful balance of sweet and sexy, heat and humor, depth and lightness, like a symphony orchestra brought together to play one perfect chord.

I am inspired when I listen to these books and hope to continue enjoying them for a long time!

What an entertaining read Survivor in Death is!

Excellent

Excellent story & narration. One of my favorites in the J. D. Robb saga for the characterization of Nixie and the development of Eve and Roarke as they work through what to do with a troubled child.
