Publisher's Summary

Gold Dagger-winner and best-selling author in the United Kingdom, Ian Rankin crafts absorbing crime novels with solidly drawn characters and first-rate plotting. In Strip Jack, he portrays a shocking murder investigation that exposes the sordid side of Edinburgh politics and society.

Detective John Rebus suspects a set-up when a respected Member of Parliament is caught in a police raid on a brothel—and his flamboyant wife suddenly disappears. After the woman’s badly beaten body shows up, it becomes Rebus’ job to find the killer. Is the MP really self-destructing as circumstances suggest? Or is a bitter enemy out to get him? Suddenly Rebus finds himself facing off with a cunning killer who holds all the cards. Narrator Samuel Gillies’ well-paced performance underscores all the tension in this intriguing read.

    "Rebus regains early promise"

This listen seemed more solid in plot, character and writing than Rebus #2 and #3. Narrator Gillies seems to let Rebus be a little more Scots - but still does not deliver the man from Edinburgh as well as James Macpherson in Knots and Crosses. I find that Rebus starts to "age" well from this point on in the series. I hope Audible keeps adding the later titles!

    "Rankin's great"

This story gets out there rightaway, and you are into it up to your neck. Everything is fast-moving as usual with Rebus sometimes annoying, as his general character is meant to be. I was right with this reading from begining to end. couldn't put the book down(so to speak).
The narrator is excellent and the surprise but very interesting ending had you guessing all the time. Highly recommended reading. I would love to talk with this author, he must be a hoot!

    Story
"Not really the Rebus from the later books."
What did you like about this audiobook?

Not much. I've read all of the Rebus books prior to reading this one which was disappointing.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

I've been reading all the European/British mysteries I can find for years, including Rankin.

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

The information is there, but the plot is uninteresting and it just doesn't sound like the later Rebus I've enjoyed.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

It was boring. Narrators of other Rebus books were better.

Do you have any additional comments?

Since I've read the other Rebus books, I was excited to find one I'd missed, but was disappointed. I'm enjoying the new series, although I miss Rebus.

"Reading performance is the poorest of any audible."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A better reading performance. I was frequently unable to distinguish which character was being portrayed.

What was most disappointing about Ian Rankin’s story?

I am a "John Rebus" fan and am probably not as critical about the story.
