Publisher's summary

For the first time in unabridged audio!

A small Kansas town has turned into a killing ground. Is it a serial killer, a man with the need to destroy? Or is it a darker force, a curse upon the land? Amid golden cornfields, FBI Special Agent Pendergast discovers evil in the blood of America's heart.

Critic reviews

"As usual, Preston and Child deftly mix the real and the surreal, creating an atmosphere in which everything, for reasons we can't quite nail down, seems a tad off-kilter. Call it creeping paranoia, perhaps, or the dreadful certainty that something awful is about to happen. Whatever you call it, it's a recipe for success." ( Booklist)

Still a good listen

The ending is a bit weak but the rest of the book is very enjoyable. It is very well narrated.

The best of the Pendergast series thus far!

The Pendergast novels just get better and better. The characters are always well fleshed out and even the seemingly most minor detail can come back to he a major turning point in the story. Don't hesitate to try this book.

Pendergast excellent hero.

The combination unique lead character, great cast, and thrilling mystery go great together. This is my first in the series and I highly recommend it. I am considering the series for future reading.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Character development is important to me in a book. The Characters in this book were very real and interesting. A very good read.

Good and at times Bloody Scary!!

This was the first of the Pendergast series I read (though not the first in the series) and it stood alone without reading the rest. It was in my opinion the best of the series and this narrator really capture the Pendergast character so well it kind of spoiled the other books because I missed him. The story is very involving and at times very scary. At one point I made the mistake of listening to an especially frightening scene while driving and was so involved I nearly rear ended the car in front of me. The book was also filled with interesting and disturbing tidbits of information that stayed with me long after the story was done (Be Warned - You May Never Eat Turkey Again!!) Sadly though I have since read quite a few of the other books I never really felt they lived up to this one.

A. PENDERGAST GOES ON VACATION

Well, perhaps that is the intention of his trip away from the darkness of the 3 previous books in this series. This story brings out the agent's humanity as others have not. It is a refreshing travel into a new setting with a more humorous portrayal of life. There are references to The Cabinet of Curiosities but this story is an altogether different adventure -- not without its own suspense and mystery.

You will not be disappointed! But..... the suspense might kill you!

I have already read this book and just finished listening to it! Oh my goodness it was so so good! The suspense almost killed me! I was literally hugging myself and yelling no, no! Don’t go that way! Omgoodness he’s going to die! No that did not just happen! Watch out! Run, run, run!!! Omg that’s so disgusting! I love Agent Pendergast!!!! I think I want to marry him! I’m just saying 🤣Preston and Child one of my all time favorite authors!
