Publisher's summary

For the first time in unabridged audio!

A small Kansas town has turned into a killing ground. Is it a serial killer, a man with the need to destroy? Or is it a darker force, a curse upon the land? Amid golden cornfields, FBI Special Agent Pendergast discovers evil in the blood of America's heart.

Critic reviews

"As usual, Preston and Child deftly mix the real and the surreal, creating an atmosphere in which everything, for reasons we can't quite nail down, seems a tad off-kilter. Call it creeping paranoia, perhaps, or the dreadful certainty that something awful is about to happen. Whatever you call it, it's a recipe for success." ( Booklist)

Missing Rene Auberjonois- the ONLY Pendergast

While it was great to finally get this book in full, unabridged format- a big mistake in choice of narrator. Scott Brick is awful as Pendergast, and doesn't come close to the wonderful voice of Auberjonois -who brings Pendergast to life. The story is really good, and of course keeps up the suspense to the end, but I struggled to get past the voice. I would have given this book a 5 star rating if not for the narration- - -

Superb

I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy the same book, although considerably longer, again. However DP and LC have never let me down. The vivid description of the land (who new corn could be described so eloquently) and the off beat motley group of characters, narrated by the man behind the curtain the Great Oz himself, Scott Brick was brilliant.

You always get hooked on Agent Pentagrass.

Enjoyed this volume. I just wish it had a better lead to the next.
Why did the Monster grow so big and get his skills?

Didn't want to leave work

Who was your favorite character and why?

Agent Pendergast - my first time introduced to him.I haven't been much of a reader since graduating college and only know of him through Audible.I am a bench tech and get tired of listening to music and news,so a fellow bench tech here got me listening to books. He reminds me of Law and Order's Det.Goren - intelligent,well-read,always curious, soft spoken, not easily flustered, stands up to rich snobs and bullies with a calm confidence.

Good Pendergast

Creative storyline if somewhat predictable. Cave chase scenes went on far too long. Otherwise very enjoyable and entertaining.

Best pendergast story!

I've read all the Pendergast series and this is the best one. I decided to listen to it after reading it. Scott Brick is an amazing narrator and does great accents of the characters. This is a must listen!

Gripping plot and endearing characters. Hope to see this as a movie some day.

Riveting and breathtaking

We listen to these stories as we drive 7 hours each way to see his parents every couple of months. No sleepiness on those drives!

Not Profound but Entertaining

Books like this remind me of TV shows. The characters are not deep and the plot is not realistic. If you really thought about it you would find lots of holes in the story.

That being said, the characters are interesting and the story engaging.

If you are looking to shut off your mind and listen to a good, if implausible, story you should enjoy the book (assuming you like mystery and horror).

If you want something more, you might be disappointed.
