Publisher's summary

Michelle Maxwell has just blown her future with the Secret Service. Against her instincts, she let a presidential candidate out of her sight to comfort a grieving widow. Then, behind closed doors, the politician whose safety was her responsibility vanished into thin air.

Living a new life on a quiet lake in central Virginia, Sean King knows how the younger agent feels. He's been there before. In an out-of-the-way hotel eight years earlier, the hard-charging Secret Service man allowed his attention to be diverted for a split second. And the presidential candidate Sean was protecting was gunned down before his eyes.

Now Michelle and Sean are about to see their destinies converge. She has become obsessed with Sean's case. And he needs a friend - especially since a series of macabre killings has brought him under suspicion and prompted the reappearance of a seductive woman he's tried hard to forget.

As the two discredited agents enter a maze of lies, secrets, and deadly coincidences, they uncover a shocking truth: that the separate acts of violence that shattered their lives were really a long time in the making - and are a long way from over....

Last Chapter Hurt My Head

Any additional comments?

I liked the characters, and the story until it got too unbelievable; the last chapter gave me a headache trying to understand who was who and what each characters did or didn't do. It was unnecessarily convoluted.

Good from start to finish!

I used to seek books out by the Authors only, Scott Brick was so good, I may have to see if I can search by the Narrator as well. This was one fun book!

Great start to the King & Maxwell series

I've read many of the other Baldacci books. This is also a very enjoyable one.

Good book!

I enjoyed it, I had to go back and listen to this book, but I've only found one book so far that I haven't loved from Baldacci. This is a good one, worth the credit/

Story is OK...

I really hate this reader. He's so arch and pedantic. He has good diction; I'll give him that.

A Great listen!

Great inventive story. A franchise maybe? Lots of potential. Give it a go! What do you have to lose?

Good, but got lost toward the end

Good story, but too much of the mystery unravelled at the end and it was difficult to follow all of the pieces.

King & Maxwell's First Case

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

yes.

Any additional comments?

This is the first King & Maxwell story. Basically, it's the story of how two disgraced Secret Service agents come together to solve two campaign-trail crimes. Overall, I thought it was a sub-par plot, but the characters were delightful.

Baldacci Never Disappoints!

Arrogant politicians and the people who protect them .. until they can't .. or won't!

Two attacks, separated by six years, bring two black-balled Secret Service Agents together to investigate. The layers to who did it are many and twisted. The "why" is even more complex, unfolding ever-so-slightly as one tiny clue after another reveals itself ... and the culprit.

Split Second

As usual, Baldacci created another fascinating thriller with unexpected twists and sub plots. This was a very fun read.
