Suprising

What a great listen! Kept me locked in form beginning to end. I could see a sheriff like that one in a small town. I loved it.

LOVED IT

I thought I had read all of Nelson DeMille's books somehow I missed this one. It can be quite descriptive when it comes to sex/violence....so it may not be for everyone but I couldn't stop listening.

story

If you could sum up Spencerville in three words, what would they be?

it is the best for me holds my interest because of the story and the reader his way of talking..

What other book might you compare Spencerville to and why?

I read plum island by the same author and I liked it too...

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

the people in the book he makes you think you have known them before...

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

no I just enjoyed the whole book...

Spencerville

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book when it was first published back in 1994. But I’m sorry to say the narrator, Scott Brick, who I usually think is great, ruined a good story. This story was supposed to take place in a town in northern Ohio somewhere near Toledo. But apparently everyone who lives there sounds like they came from Tulsa Oklahoma. There was also some technical problems. A repeated chapter. Some high pitch squealing from time to time. But otherwise it’s a good story.

language was awful

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would warn them about the use of the f... word. It must be used 500 times! The word is used way to often!!

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

I love to listen to Scott Brick. He always does a great job and brings the story to life.

Was Spencerville worth the listening time?

Other than the language, it was a good story

Loved this book.

What a refreshing change from what can bedome mundane in John Corey. while I'm a huge Corey fan, his arrogance and cockiness can get old after several books in a row (I think I've read them all now). This book a love story written by a man for a man's ear. Very touching, and retrospective. The nemesis is easy to hate but Demille really want to go after this guy. I don't get the 3.5 Star reviews I've seen. This was a great book. It made me want to try and reach out to Demille and tell him so.

A different Demille book

Took a twisted turn at the end. Listened to a few Nelson books because he is one of my favorite authors. Can't say I'm a fan of Scott Brick the Narrator and his excessive and often incorrect use of "Riigghhtt"

Not Demille's Best Work

I have previously listened to about 10 of DeMille's novels and awarded four or five stars to all of them. This is his first three-star book. Quite simply, this book dragged. The whole narrative was in slow motion, especially the last third. It was almost as if DeMille wanted to tell a bigger story but got bogged down in the details. Everything about this book was average and 22 hours is a long time to spend on average. Even Scott Brick appeared as if he was going to nod off at times. Protagonist Keith Landry was no John Corey. I usually would laugh out loud several times an hour during a Corey listen. Don't think I chuckled once during the whole 22 hours of this book. Looking forward to my next DeMille listen because I'm sure it will be better than this one.

interesting but a little melodramatic for Deville

Good book to listen to casually but the characters are caricatures and the story unusually simple for DeMille. Even for the milder stories like Gold Coast, this tends to be sappy and overdrawn. But great entertainment for house chores... this is far from the high suspense of The Lion etc.

Not DeMille's Best

What did you like best about Spencerville? What did you like least?

Great narration by Scott Brick. This was not the most interesting DeMille book I've read. I am a big fan of DeMille, but this book was not as compelling as his others. I felt it was a waste of a credit.

Would you ever listen to anything by Nelson DeMille again?

Yes, I've enjoyed is other books.+

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

Cliff Baxter

Do you think Spencerville needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No, the main characters were not interesting enough for me to care what happens to them next.
