Later, Joe has a visitor - the woman's teenage daughter, a runaway from boarding school. She refuses to believe that her mother would have jumped off the bridge - not only would she not commit suicide, she is terrified of heights. Joe wants to believe her, but what would drive a woman to such a desperate act? Whose voice? What evil?

I was looking forward to this. I enjoyed his previous books but unfortunately this one, although often enjoyable was frustrating. The main character often does things that are slightly incredulous and it is a little frustratingly predictable. I would write more but don't want to ruin the story for others.
One of the best. I just wanted to keep on going. Especially good on the long drive.
Clever plot with continual twists
All books that I have listened to by Sean Barrett have been outstanding. It took me a while to forget Harry Hole but then I was hooked.
Yes because it was a well constructed story and was very well read
Yes the plot provided many surprises and held my interest right through to the end
No particular scene was overly memorable, however there were no flat spots so I was thoroughly entertained
Another Joseph O'Loughlin thriller that should not be missed
Getting a view of English People living in small communities and their daily lives.
Dr. Joe, I have really enjoyed learning about his character, his strengths and weaknesses and his compassion for people in general and his family.
When the Police finally trapped the psychopath
When Charlie showed how strong she was, even as an innocent victim.
I found that I was disturbed on so many levels by the actions and personality of the villain.
I have know people with some of his traits and his ability to inflict mental cruelty upon others and now look at those people with new insightful eyes. Holy crap!
"Hooked from start to finish"
My first audible title and turned out to be a great selection from the vast number of those available. It had me gripped from the first minute and kept me wanting to listen to more each time I pressed the play button.
Story was excellent as was the narration. I felt for the innocent and wanted to get my hands on the 'baddy'.
"Riveting story that I nearly didn't start"
I nearly gave up at the beginning of the book as I was annoyed by the clich?d depiction of academics and a women police-officer as well as the apparent carelessness of the writer not to check that you don't start training as a clinical psychologist as a university fresher. You have to have a psychology degree first and then you do post graduate training. The supposed introductory lecture to the psychology course was laughable. Now that I've got that off my chest I have to say that it is a riveting story, though shocking at times, it keeps one listening. The book improved as it went along and by the end had me thinking about how a person can become inured to cruelty by circumstances such as war: a topical issue.
"THE TITLE IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. THIS IS EXPLOSIVE!"
Make sure your battery is charged, because you won't want to put this one down! Strap yourself in for a roller-coaster ride, and you'll be in for a treat.
Shocking, funny, sad, terrifying this is a story you'll remember for a very long time.
Micheal Robotham is a very skilled writer, and the narration by Sean Barrett makes it a delight to listen to.
This is the first Robotham book I've 'read' and now I'm totally hooked!
I'm looking forward to the next one.
"Dark, gripping story"
The story is we written. Characters were easy to see in the mind's eye, though a little formulaic in spots. Excellent narration. I have searched for and downloaded other titles read aloud by the same. A good, long drive listen.
First Michael Robotham and certainly not my last,
This is what I love about audible, as this is not a writer I know of or would have picked. However it popped up when I was looking at a writer I had read before, and when I scrolled to other readers chose these authors/books in this genre, here it was, so thank you.
Chlling tale of mind games and how mothers will do anything to protect their children,
Great character the pscychologist with his ilness family dynamics it made him very real. Also the retired police inspector who previously arrested him proved to be a very believable characters warts and all.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
"Not for those of a nervous disposition!"
One of the most disturbing stories I have ever listened to.....no in fact it is thee most disturbing story I have ever listened to.
This is such a well crafted story that will at times makes you laugh, but at others will chill you too the bone and leave you feeling uncomfortable, uneasy and understanding the real menace offered by words that echoes with the threat presented by the main protagonist.
This won't be for everyone due to the subject matter but you have to admire the craft of the writer, so well observed and so well told its like being hit with the softest velvet glove only to discover its full of lead shot. Clever in the extreme.
"Made by the narrater"
Gripping, shocking, believable
Joe, all of the characters came to life.
When Julianne is recovered and grabs hold of Joe to ask about Charlie
Great story, really gripping with some hugely tense moments. Sean Barrett really brings it to life and the conversations between Joe and the perpetrator were read brilliantly.
Great story. Totally addicted!
Great story.. all to be honest. To define one moment would be unfair to the rest of the book. Bought all in the series.
Riveting … Bought a lot of books… and most disappointed this didn’t!!!
Brilliant... top! Write more Micheal! - Joseph O'Loughlin books. Please.
"Tense but not always easy to listen to"
The central characters are all interesting and there is great tension in the story but some details of the abuse of children are really harrowing
The story is not like any other I've read or listened to
There is a scene when the central character, Joe O'Loughlin confronts his wife's boss whom he suspects of having an affair with her. It is hilarious and cringe making at the same time
Joe's frenetic search for his daughter when she disappears
The very graphic descriptions of the abuse the perpetrator threatens on the chidren is hard to listen to but I certainly would be interesed to listen to other books by Michael Robotham
"A good gripping tale"
This is only my second Michael Robotham novel and I enjoyed it much better than the first. The story is gripping and I wanted to keep listening. Sean Barrett's narration is very good and I would thoroughly recommend this book.
