Publisher's Summary

Secession is a fast-paced adventure novel set against the current-day backdrop of a politically divided United States.

Zachariah Bass is a young Texas Ranger, struggling to define his role in serving the people of the state's remote western territories.

Working a series of heinous crimes, Zach uncovers a dark, treacherous secret - a conspiracy that could alter America's future and result in the secession of Texas.

Co-authored by P.A. Troit and best-selling writer Joe Nobody, Secession explores a world where a hopelessly gridlocked government fuels an ever-deepening divide between right and left. The public's frustration with the country's direction forces desperate leaders on both sides of the political spectrum to consider splitting the union.

Based on actual historic events, current economic realities, and a growing global trend, Secession immerses the listener in a lifelike scenario that could be America's future.

    "Worst narration ever!"

From the beginning this story line intrigued me. Texas, being the only state that can legally secede, actually doing so made me want to delve into the how's and why's of their choice to do so. The narrators voice, while being suited to perhaps some other genre, absolutely ruins this book. The hesitant way in which the main character spoke and his high-pitched voice made him seem like a prepubescent teen working in a man's world. As a matter of fact all the characters voices were this way. Additionally the echo which indicated an internal thought of the main character, sounded almost like the character was schizophrenic. And the way the chapters segued with some sort of middle eastern guitar music sounding very loudly not only startled me but did not fit in at all with a story set in Texas/Louisiana. The main characters history and current profession not to mention the fact he was from Texas, would lend itself to a slow cadence and drawl, perhaps a gravelly sounding voice. Matthew McConaughey, Sam Elliot, etc. would have been perfect for this role. Instead every time he spoke I wanted to ask if he needed cheese to go with his whine.

    "Different from what I expected."

Not sure some of the content was necessary. A bit darker than I thought was necessary, but an interesting read otherwise. Gave it four stars because it was different and well written. Again, the assassination attempt was a bit over the top and sort of distracted from the story.

    "Not even through it yet..."
Would you try another book from Joe Nobody and P.A. Troit and/or Dave Wright?

    Not with Wright narrating.

What did you like best about this story?

The story line is relevant to the current events.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

In all possible ways. He sounds like a cross between Capt Kirk and Andy Griffith arm wrestling. Wright's transition between voices is lacking. It would be so much better if it was just read in a matter-of-fact sense without all of the hesitant pre-word syllables. Who talks like that, other than 11 year old kids?

Could you see Secession: The Storm being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    no

    Any additional comments?

10 mins into it and I was regretting the purchase. The banjo twangs between sections is really annoying.

    "Normally a decent narrator,"

Mr. Wright missed the mark on a few male voices, making them all sound frustratingly female, or at least feminine. Not what I expected from TX Rangers, etc.

    "Horrible"

Felt like Fox-News Fan-Fiction. While politically I am very centrist and very pro-second amendment, the clear fringe right-wing political leanings hit you over the head so much you cannot get in to the story. I am more than willing to suspend belief for a good story, however armed IRS agents kicking down doors and holding people was so implausible that it takes you out of the story, from all of the eye-rolling. It would be fine if it was supposed to be satire, but it takes its self FAR too seriously.

I'm not sure who is at fault for the narration, the narrator or the producer who felt it was necessary to make the narrator you voice gimmicks and production effects, i.e. Someone is talking on the phone, and an effect is used to make the narrator sound like he's talking through a tube. Someone in the story is far away so the narrator gets far away from the microphone.

Everyone involved in the creation of this story and the audio production should be punished for their crimes against story telling.

    "I liked it."

It was a good book. Different from other types of books I've been attracted to. But I liked it. I will buy the second book when it is available. I didn't care for the jingles after a conclusion was made.

"Definately this is going to be a great series."

Completely enjoyed this book, characters were well definded, and the story was just flat out fun to listen to. Kept me "plugged in" and couldn't put it down. Other than the rather loud music between some of the chapters that was a bit distracting over-all this series is going to be a winner. And to be honest I'd venture to say a session would look like this and the character who's the "president" had me laughing yep that'd be her all right and her embarassing the entire country husband [back in his day]! You'll have some pretty hairy points to go through as would be expected and the hero was about an average guy as you'll find in law enforcement I'd say having been a cop awhile back. There are a few times when you listen and say damn that is what is happening here in the USA, and if Texas actually did break away from this dictatorship I'd move there in a minute. As I would most certainly!

    "Good Book, Terrible Voice Actor"
How could the performance have been better?

David Wright was Terrible for this. The story itself was the only saving grace the overtook the bad performance.

Was Secession: The Storm worth the listening time?

The Story is good. Just wait until they get a new reader.

    Any additional comments?

I am currently only in the middle of this book, so please be open to my review. I really like the book as a story and it is well written; however, the read/voice actor is terrible. I will finish this book but I believe I will hold off on the series if it is read by David Wright. His performance in this book is making it hard for me to listen to. I would have returned the book already if it hadn’t been for the good story. Audible may want to have a new reader for the series before you have a lack of customer who are willing to forgo the bad voice acting.

"Good story with correlations to today."

I found the story interesting and engaging. The character development and introductions were often times tedious, but the first book in a series are somewhat like that.
My only complaint is the narrator's tone with the main character Zach. For being a 6 foot plus Texas Ranger, the narrator chose to make him sound like a high school teenager. A modestly high pitched voice with a dash of adolescent diffidence. Didn't work for me.
