"Anne Perry NOT at her best"

I am a great fan of this author which surprised me, because I generally am not drawn to anything Victorian. I have really enjoyed her books and their descriptions of life in England at this time -- for each of the social classes.

She also has great character development, and different characters or pairs of characters star in different books, making for a nice way to see all sides while still watching somewhat familiar people become even more accessible.

That said, this is not one of her better efforts. The plot really drags and there are no real clues for the reader, so we become aware of the answer at the same time as our "heroes".So, I'd recommend skipping this one entirely and read all her others.

    "Strong Storyline, Pleasant Plot Twists"

Rutland Place is one of the stronger books in the early part of this series. The characters are sympathetic and believable, but also compelling without being over-the-top or just plain dastardly. It's not as action packed and some of the other novels about Inspector and Mrs. Pitt, but I was never bored. The plot centers on Charlotte Pitt's mother and deals with the general theme of woman's dependence on the men in her life, including marital dissatisfaction, a widow who doesn't wish to remarry, and the intricacies of a sibling relationship. As usual, the mystery is solved by an 11th-hour revelation; so if you enjoy sleuthing and sifting through various clues doled out by the author, this mayb not exactly be the book for you. But if you like character-heavy detection and being carried along the current of the story to see where it leads you, then you will enjoy Anne Perry's style. As always, Davina Porter does a masterful job narrating.

    "Disappointing"

I listened to 60% of the book and I really wanted to like this story as I am a fan of things relating to the era this is set in. But the story goes at a snail's pace - I kept waiting for the story to get interesting and engaging.

Surely the minor facts conveyed could've been artfully expressed in half the time this book took to do so. After being done over half the book all I've learned was that a charming foreigner is the common thread in 2 situations (possible murder and a "scandalous" flirtation with a married woman).

The entire book is just a series of conversations about how to extract info without bothering the sensibilities of the era. Hardly an interesting thing to ponder and write about incessantly.

    "Not worth the time"

This is by far the worst book I have gotten at Audible. If you enjoy listening to a bunch of old snobbish ladies sitting around gossiping for 8 hours this is the book for you. The first chapter is around 40 minutes and covers absolutly nothing. An abridged version of this book would probably only be 15 minutes long. The story keeps repeating the conversations over and over. The main 2 charactors meet with different friends, and while the cast changes, the conversations are identical. There is absolutly no charactor developement, if the narrator doesn't tell you who is talking, you have no way of knowing. This is the first book I didn't finish from Audible, and don't reccomend that you wast your time. After 3.5 hours, my wife and I both scrapped it.

"Perry comes close to creating worthwhile novels."

I think Perry is another example of someone who could create really worthwhile historical fiction if only she would concentrate on the quality rather than the quanitiy in her series.

I thought the first novel in this series was worth following up with reading more - but rather than adding depth to characters and detail to the social history, "Rutland Place" and "Callendar Sqaure" just seemed to me wordy, repetive prose with padded dialogue with minor mysteries. "The Cater Street Hangman", the first in the series, was worth the listening time.

I prefer urban/para romance right now for the fantasy aspect, but I listen to other genres as well.

    "Solid Victorian Mystery"
Where does Rutland Place rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This series is at the upper mid point of my favorites. Unfortunately, you can't take that as a true measure of the quality of this book. At last count I am following over 90 authors and their series.

What did you like best about this story?

Finding out who the "bad guy" is. In an Anne Perry book, you usually think you know who it is, but you are most likely wrong. She is good at throwing red herrings into her books to take you down the wrong rabbit whole.

What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Davina Porter is incredible! I have tried other books purely because she was the narrator. Her pacing is perfect, her inflections between characters is fantastic. I can't say enough wonderful things about her.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No. But its always entertaining when Charlotte finds herself in trouble after Pitt has told her not to do something.

    Any additional comments?

These are very good books. Solid writing, good character development, immersive realistic world. You really feel like you are in Victorian London. You feel the difference between the London classes. I would recommend these to anyone who likes historical or regular mysteries.

    "Very nice historical mystery"

This was my first Anne Perry book. It was enjoyable and had a nice ending. The characters were well developed as well as the plot. Of course the narrator was wonderful. She's one of my favorites!
