Robert Ludlum's(TM) The Ares Decision: A Covert-One Novel | [Kyle Mills]

Robert Ludlum's(TM) The Ares Decision: A Covert-One Novel

With U.S. intelligence agencies wracked by internal power struggles and paralyzed by bureaucracy, the President was forced to establish his own clandestine group-Covert-One. It is only activated as a last resort, when the threat is on a global scale and time is running out. In northern Uganda, an American special forces team is decimated by a group of normally peaceful farmers. Video of the attack shows even women and children possessing almost supernatural speed and strength, consumed with a rage that makes them immune to pain, fear, and all but the most devastating injuries.

Publisher's Summary

With U.S. intelligence agencies wracked by internal power struggles and paralyzed by bureaucracy, the President was forced to establish his own clandestine group-Covert-One.

Covert-One's top operative, army microbiologist Colonel Jon Smith, is sent to investigate the attack and finds evidence of a parasitic infection that for centuries has been causing violent insanity and then going dormant. This time, though, it's different. The parasite had been purposely kept alive and crudely transmitted in acts of terrorism. Now the director of Iranian Intelligence is in Uganda trying to obtain this biological weapon to unleash it on the West.

Smith and his team are ambushed and cut off from all outside support just as they begin to suspect that forces much more powerful than the Iranians are in play-forces that can be traced to Washington itself.

    "Great Book"

I was skepticle since I didn't really like the last book for Covert One written by James Cobb but Kyle Mills did an excellant job. He brought back Marty, Peter and Randi. It was fast paced and a good read.

"Excellent It was worth the wait."

I've read the entire Covert One series and this was no disappointment. It was a real page turner and I found it difficult to find stopping points. I just wanted to keep listening late into the night. Adding one of the series background characters to the Covert One team is a good move. I can see where this will help new novels in the future. This is well worth the credit and time spent listening. I highly recommend it. The narrator did a good job but I would have been happier listening to Dick Hill or Scott Brick.

    "Welcome Back Covert-One"

I think Kyle Mills did a great job in bringing back to life all the detail of character, plot and place that made the Covert-One series one of my all-time favorites. And props to Jeff Woodman for a narration well done . . .

    More please!

    "Reader"

the Covert Ones top man Kline is a man in his 60's as noted in previous books... read them all.... this reader, Jeff Woodman, makes him sound like a 28 year old... all the voices are too young,,, he has no breath of ages in his reading.... Covert one is my favorite series.. and this reader really pushes me to finish the book....

    "Great Story, Awful Narrator"
What made the experience of listening to Robert Ludlum's(TM) The Ares Decision the most enjoyable?

I love this story and series, was happy to see another book from it.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot was fast and kept me entertained in-spite of the awful narration.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The Iranian characters sounded like they had a Scotish Accent. Worst narration I've ever experienced in any audio book I've listened to.

"Decent book, but not up to Ludlum's standards"

I like the Covert One series, and this is a good continuation. If you liked the other novels, this will be a decent read as well. However, Kyle Mills is not quite up to Ludlum's standards as the writing itself goes. There are several times in the book where the characters are left in a precarious situation and then when we finally get back to them, we find them out of danger miraculously with only a sentence or so explaining the "miraculous" thing that happened to save them from certain doom, without going into any real detail.

The voices I have in my head for the characters don't match this narrator, but he's really not as bad as some of the reviews make him sound.

I do hope this series is going somewhere, though. I hope they don't try to add book after book with no real plan on how to end things. I think these characters are probably just about "done." They've been through too much for it to be plausible that they will continue like this indefinitely.

    "Need different narrator"

I would like Jeff Woodman's narration for a different book, however, I could not love these characters the say way that I did with Paul Michael's narration in the previous books. It's almost like watching a movie dubbed from a different language! Bring back the Jon, Peter and Marty we know and love.

"Not as good as other covert one novels"

It was a good book, but there where some times where the train went off the tracks, Im a huge Zombie and John Smith fan. I was really excited when these two came together, but the book fell short. The book is entertaining but maybe I was expecting something else.

    "Wow what a story!"

I'm normally a scify reader but after my wife mentioned this title I had to get it. Boy was it worth it. This is one of those books you just can't put down. You just can't stop until you see what comes up next. Loving series titles the way I do I've just got to get the rest do it!
