Publisher's summary

In this tense, riveting mind game, New York Times bestselling novelist Nelson DeMille delivers a suspenseful short story in the tradition of his classic military novels The General's Daughter and Word of Honor. A band of soldiers in its last month of service in Vietnam goes out on a patrol through enemy territory with a female sniper in its path. Recounting the mission in shattering and sometimes gruesome detail, DeMille creates a concise masterpiece of moody suspense.

Demille served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and saw combat in Vietnam as an infantry platoon leader, earning a Bronze Star. He states that Rendezvous features a fictionalized version of himself from that experience.

GOOD SHORT STORY

This book kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what would happen next and who would make it and who wouldn't. I knew the narrator, so to speak would make it, otherwise he wouldn't be talking, but getting there is most the suspense!

Great 1 hour short story...

...about a female Vietnamese sniper taking on a group of 12 US Army soldiers. The story is first person told by the US lieutenant that led the group. The story is set in Vietnam during the US war there. The suspense is intense, but as good as it is the short story is simply not worth the cost.

One...by...one

Short story (1 hour listen) about a combat patrol in Vietnam. Suspenseful and exciting as the patrol is followed by a female sniper. One by one, they are picked off...until the end.

A DeMille Classic

I’m a VN veteran from 67 and 68 and although never a LRRP member listening gave me chills and memories of those that didn’t make it back. That’s something I should think about more often. This woke me up to that fact and I will think of those left behind more often. Also thanks for always using Scott Brick as your narrator. I have listened to all your books more than once and he is your voice to me. I listened to your latest release and hope there is another soon as I’m not getting any younger.

Good war story

What did you love best about Rendezvous?

I liked the characters, including a female Viet Cong sniper. There was a good sense of place, danger, fear and valor. The squad had the requisite diverse demographic

What other book might you compare Rendezvous to and why?

Rendezvous reminded me of Matterhorn, though much shorter and not as intense. The hook of a female sniper was more intense in Full Metal Jacket, a realistic horror.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My reaction was not extreme as it was in, for example, Dispatches or Matterhorn, but the book served the purpose and kept my attention, though briefly because it's brief. :)

Any additional comments?

Not earth-shaking, but diverting.

Short story or long: Nelson DeMille is King

This one-hour white knuckler is proof once again that Nelson DeMille is truly the king of story tellers. He supplies the detailed environment, the background story and the in-depth portrayal of character that make for a living, vivid experience - minute by minute. But more than this, he gives you a deeply satisfying psychological and philosophical experience that touches all of your hot buttons: sensual, survival, vengeful, analytic, sense of duty and brotherhood -- all wrapped up in an amazing experience. And he does it, novel after novel -- saga after saga. The icing on the cake is Scott Brick's near-flawless, clenched-jaw delivery. Having heard (not read) every single work that Mr.DeMille has on Audible (and there is a LOT of them!) I can say that Scott Brick makes all the difference in the level of enjoyment. Although, candidly he delivers in that same, predictable voice - it IS undoubtedly the voice of Nelson's very soul as it always seems to fit the action, from caustic and hostile to sensual and vulnerable. Please write another one Mr. DeMille. All other reads are comparatively anti-climatic.

Excellent, Enthralling

I really liked this story. I have only read longer novels by Mister DeMille and I am a fan. This is an excellent short story, possibly based in part on Mister DeMille’s life experiences. The story is gripping. The narration is very good. I am glad that I came across this work. Thank You….

Seclusion

A good short about one troop in the Vietnam War who are being eliminated one at a time by a female sniper. I don't usually read books about that time because I remember how horrible it was for our Men and our Country, however, Nelson DeMille's writing was excellent and the narration was done perfectly, without exaggeration.

Fantastic all the way through to the Rendevous!

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Granted it's not very long which is a shame as I could have listened to a whole lot more. DeMille obviously knows what he's talking about! He had me hooked from first minute! A great narration Scott Brick. A perfect duo. Loved it and would definitely recommend it!
