Publisher's summary

An action-packed and all-too-realistic vision of nations navigating the minefield of international intrigue, Protect and Defend is Vince Flynn's most explosive political thriller yet. The action begins in the heart of Iran, where billions of dollars are being spent on the development of a nuclear program. No longer willing to wait for the international community to stop its neighboring enemy, Israel launches a creative and daring operation that leaves a radioactive tomb in the middle of Iran's second largest city. An outraged Iranian government publicly blames both Israel and the United States and demands retribution.

Enter Mitch Rapp, America's top counterterrorism operative. Rapp convinces President Josh Alexander to sign off on a risky operation that will push Iran to the brink of revolution. But when Iran recruits Hezbollah master terrorist Imad Mukhtar, and a CIA effort goes disastrously wrong, Rapp and Mukhtar are set on a collision course that threatens to engulf the entire region in war. With the clock ticking, Rapp is given 24 hours, no questions asked, to do whatever it takes to stop Mukhtar, and avert an unthinkable catastrophe.

Critic reviews

"Flynn didn't invent the post-9/11 thriller, but he might as well have....[He] is the best pure adrenaline-charged action writer out there today." ( Providence Journal)

Slow start

Very slow start & probably the most boring of the series. Narrator is awesome .

When it absolutely positively has to be done right

Vince Flynn does it again with another political thriller ripped right from tomorrow's headlines. A story more relevant today than when it was imagined.

I heartily recommend this to any fan of Vince Flynn, narrator George Guidall, Mitch Rapp, Irene Kennedy, and dead terrorists everywhere.

very current topic

Flynn does another top flight job of presenting Mitch Rapp, the CIA superhero/antihero. Mitch is likable and despictable at the same time. Lots of tension that makes for a good read. I finished this book the day the NIE report was released that Iran had suspended efforts to build a bomb. That was a minor part of the book so it didn't really affect the story. The plot was interesting and moved quickly and kept the listeners interest.

Flynn did an especially good job of forcing the listener to think about a topic many Americans are struggling with - torture in interrogation. He presented the issue in a way that made clear the ethical, moral, legal and political aspects of interrogation that goes clearly beyond accepted bounds for many.

Well worth the time spent. I will certainly give Vince Flynn a try on his next book.

Never a complaint, other than it ended : (

Someone should come out with a never-ending Mitch Rapp book, that would be so amazing. For others out there that are extremely concerned like I was at this point that I was slowly running out of my Mitch Rapp books there's only one other series that has come close to comparing and that is the Joe Ledger series. I would have given anything for someone to tell me about either of these earlier on but then again, I'm extremely jealous of those who just now are starting them : ) Good luck not freaking out when you catch up to the new author 😲 Or God forbid see the American Assassin movie that was released a little while ago... Worst Movie Ever. I think they based it off of a different book and just got confused with the title. For their sakes I hope that's the case.

Protect and Defend

This is best enjoyed if you first read previous Flynn novels with the same characters, i.e., Rapp, Kennedy, etc. Your insight into their characters, what's happened before, will greatly help give this story more fire. It's a great read, recommended.

Protect and Defend

To me this is the best written book in the Mitch Rapp series and the one all others are measured against.
