Publisher's summary

COMING IN JUNE AS AN APPLE ORIGINAL SERIES FROM APPLE TV+ STARRING JAKE GYLLENHAAL

From #1 New York Times bestselling author and hailed as the most suspenseful and compelling novel in decades, this story brings to life our worst nightmare: that of an ordinary citizen facing conviction for the most terrible of all crimes.

Rusty Sabich, family man and the number-two prosecutor of Kindle County, is handed an explosive case--the brutal murder of a woman who happens to be his former lover. A shocking turn of events suddenly transforms him from the accuser into the accused... and plunges him into a nightmare world where nothing seems real and no one can be PRESUMED INNOCENT.

It's the stunning portrayal of one man's all-too-human, all-consuming fatal attraction for a passionate woman who is not his wife, and the story of how his obsession puts everything he loves and values on trial--including his own life. It's a book that lays bare a shocking world of betrayal and murder, as well as the hidden depths of the human heart. And it will hold you and haunt you...long after you have reached its shattering conclusion.

good enough listen

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes, distracting story.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

no... but kept me listening. Voice got repetitive, not much inflection.

Have you listened to any of Edward Herrmann’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

just wait .....

Get on with it...

I found myself saying "get on with it" quite often during this book, very slow and nothing that really captured me. Lots of characters, all of whom have nick names, I found that hard to follow.

A terrific story of real life fiction…

It’s is completely plausible that such people exist and could do to each other everything written in this novel. The author does a great job of bringing each characters strengths and weaknesses to life. The narration by Edward Herman was terrific even without the true male and female voices. This story was so well written and performed, you never had to wonder who was thinking or speaking. The movie adaptation, though less complex, was also well done. I highly recommend both.

Excellent book

I very much enjoyed this read and look forward to reading the next one, as soon as, possible. The level of suspense was not anticipated by me and lasted through the very end.

Not what I expected which is a good thing

Was expecting some crazy twisty legal thriller that everyone has ripped off since. The book has its twists don't get me wrong but in the end it is a surprising study of the people connected to the murder trial with no insane last second out of left field stuff. Everyone is compromised in some way. The book is definitely a product of its time and biases but overall holds up well.

Beautiful

Beautiful writing. Really enjoyed it. Glad I listened to this. I was in the mood for courtroom drama. It was better than that.

Gripping, Brilliant Court Drama!

I love a good lawyer fest and this one gave me everything I wanted. . .lots of suspense, great characters, and so many clever twists and turns in the court room and elsewhere. The pace of the story may not be thrilling enough for some; it is a narration by the central figure in the drama and his story winds up to the action rather slowly. The slow beginning is well worth the wait however, as the action will keep you wondering through the very end.

Good -- even great performance by Herrmann.
