Critic reviews

"Anyone who has read Perry knows the anticipatory pleasure that comes just from holding a new book with his name on the cover. Fans of Jane, last seen in Runner, will enjoy this elegantly written tale of pursuit and revenge." ( Library Journal)

welcome back Jane Whitefield

Would you listen to Poison Flower again? Why?

Yes, I would listen again, as I have the other Jane Whitefield stories.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jane is always my favorite character. She lives in the modern world , never forgetting her heritage. She honors and reveres those who have gone before us.

What does Joyce Bean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Joyce has a very soothing voice with proper inflection when needed.. I enjoy listening to her narrations.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

At times, I felt concern for the characters. Like Jane was taking on too much and she would not be able to come home this time.

Any additional comments?

I just love the Jane Whitefield stories and so glad I had the opportunity to read another.. Thanks Thomas Perry for bringing by favorite heroine back!

Running is Taking Its Toll

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Didn't like this one as much as the previous. Because I was listening instead of reading I couldn't skip over the winceable parts. A little too grim for me.

If you’ve listened to books by Thomas Perry before, how does this one compare?

Have only read before and always loved the Jane Whiteside character.

What three words best describe Joyce Bean’s voice?

Flat affect

Any additional comments?

It's hard to sustain a long running series. While it's important to put the character under pressure I don't like to witness on-going torture.

Grim reality

I love this group of books and I've always found them fabulous. This is the book where the author asked the question, what if it really goes wrong. I did not find it off base, but it sort of spoiled the super hero quality of Jane Whitefield. What I can't see is where he'll go next. I love the qualities of Jane. But it's hard to see who she'll become older and wiser. I hope Thomas Perry tries for that .This is the book where youth and beauty start to fail. Real. But hard to know where it goes next.

Excellent new entry in Jane Whitefield series

I love the character of Jane Whitefield and the arcs her story have taken over the years. Usually I read the books; this was the first time I have listened. Joyce Bean told the story with subtle distinctions and inflections. She made me feel like I was right there - and that is the only problem with this story. Jane was in several situations that made me want to fast forward to get her (and me!) out of there. I didn't, but I think it would have been just as good a story if those situations were a bit more tempered - but maybe not. I do not want to be a spoiler and tell you what happened, but you'll know when you get there!

good but not up to the first five

Jane did a lot of things that were out of character for her she got caught and compromised way too often sometimes I thought the simplest thing she could do was call the police to free up Shelby's sister I understand there were consequences but the consequences would have been much higher for the guys watching her in any case it was a good book I enjoyed it I'll read the next one and if they ever make a new one but still not as good as the last ones

Love the Jane Whitefield series!

I have been hooked on the Jane Whitefield book since I read Vanishing Act years ago so was excited to see another addition to the series. The one thing I did not like about Poison Flower was the torture scenes. Not that they did not fit in the story - just that I found them too disturbing to listen to. (If I had been reading rather than listening to the book I would have simply skipped over those parts.)

antepenultimate again

Each of these Jane books feels like the last one, the kiss-off of a series, an adieu to a character, an abandonment of an oft-traveled plot device. Without spoiling the plot, I can say this feels yet again like the end for Ms. Whitfield, who is growing older and more battered and even perhaps a little cynical about the whole proposition. The paranormal plays a bigger role here than in previous texts, which probably foreshadows The End even more . . . but what do I know.

It's a nice addition to the series, and if you've read any of the others you'll want to read this one, too. I just hope Mr. Perry isn't getting tired of his own schtick, as he writes amusing potboilers and I'm not ready for him to stop.

The narration is adequate, better than some of Perry's books, like the Butcher's Boy series read in a monotone; this female narrator does an adequate job, and I'd listen to more books read by her.

Thomas Perry Does It Again!

What made the experience of listening to Poison Flower the most enjoyable?

The continuation of the business of Jane Whitefield - the central character.

What did you like best about this story?

The whole concept of the main character as a modern-day heroine putting her own body (and life) on the line for others.

What does Joyce Bean bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

To me, she is Jane Whitefield.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definately.

Any additional comments?

I discovered Thomas Perry in 2011 via the first Jane Whitefield novel, and within 12 months I had listened to all of his books. He is now my favourite author. My favourite series is the Jane Whitefield stories but I also enjoy the Butcher's Boy series as well as the individual stories.
