Publisher's summary

Daniel McEvoy has a problem. Well, really, he has several, but for this Irish ex-pat bouncer at a seedy, small-time casino, the fact that his girlfriend was just murdered in the parking lot is uppermost in his mind. That is until lots of people around him start dying, and not of natural causes. Suddenly, Daniel’s got half the New Jersey mob, dirty cops, and his man-crazy upstairs neighbor after him, and he still doesn't know what's going on. Bullets are flying, everybody's on the take and it all may be more than Daniel’s new hair plugs can handle. And Daniel’s got to find the guy who put in those hair plugs—or at least his body—and fast, or else he'll never get that voice out of his head.

Head-spinning plot twists, breakneck pacing, and some of the best banter this side of Elmore Leonard's Detroit will keep you on the edge of your seat and itching for more.

Whacky but Fun

What did you love best about Plugged?

Artemis Fowl has an irreverent humor that is a lot of fun (for a kid's book). This is a story that gets crazier and crazier. But it is just a lot of fun (for an adult's book). Can't wait to see where Colfer takes it next.

Exactly what should happen

first of what I would like to see as long running series. Colfer has hit the mark with this great piece of Adult fiction.

Hard boiled mystery with a soft Irish touch

Get Passed The Accent+Repeat Monologue & It’s Kinda Cool

Definitely written in the style of an Action Movie’s Fast Pace, Shoot’em Up, Blow things Up, Heavily Accented Irish Speaking, 48 Hours to Live, kind of Story.

If you can get passed the Narrator’s Thick Irish Accent, and his constantly and repeated self monologuing of this internal mental conflicts, then buried inside is a pretty light weight, but good plot story, at least, as much as One can expect from an Action Movie.

The characters are interesting, diverse, and many, but don’t expect to truly get to know any of them, as that isn’t what they’re there for, all of them being window dressing and devices to move the story along. Although you will likely mentally chuckle at certain moments or characters, which I’m certain was the Author’s intention.

The main character is a nice guy, ex-soldier, with an obvious and admitted, “Hero” complex, along with its associated issues. He unwittingly stumbles into a mess of trouble thanks to his association with some rather seedy characters (and so called, “Friends”), and finds himself in constant reaction and survival mode, as he tackles one obstacle and near death experience after another, after the initial body counts are racked up, and he attempts to figure out the “Who Do It”, and keep the wolves on his trail sufficiently away long enough for him to solve all the problems of his and his “friend’s” making.

It’s definitely a strap yourself in for the ride/listen, fast paced, constantly running until the end, type of experience.

I initially didn’t care for it, finding the “ghost” mental prodding, and the heavy accent a bit hard to get passed. It was after the point where I accepted the story for what it was, an over the top fast paced action movie in book form, that I was able to kick back and throughly enjoy the ride.

Hopefully, You can suspend your own expectations, and pretend you are watching a 30 minute Action Movie, because if You do, then hopefully, You too, will throughly Enjoy the ride!

Wet your pants funny.

Absolutely LOL funny! I have not read anything by Eoin Colfer that is adult reading before but it was fabulous! Good plot, funny one liners, great characters. Totally worth every second! Narration was absolutely top notch, loved John Keating’s ability to jump from Irish, the Bronx, middle eastern, southern! Total smorgasbord of voices.

Very different

This was harder to get into than some books but it was a real rollercoaster of a read

Great book, wrong narrator

For anyone who read the Artemis Fowl series, John Keating's narration will be a huge disappointment. Colfer is a witty and smart writer, but Keating trivializes and "cartoons" the writing. Why oh why didn't the wonderful Nathaniel Parker read this book... especially since it is Colfer's first, and we hope not last, venture into writing for adults. Still and all, a must listen because the writing is so good.

apparently "optional" means "required"

I had read Plugged back 7 or 8 years ago and liked it very much. It's reminiscent of Donald E. Westlake. Colfer, imo, successfully creates a sympathetic tough guy and an entertaining story. The reader did a great job.

Enjoyable if you're a Colfer fan, despite flaws

I enjoyed the story, despite its myriad of ridiculous characters and situations. I enjoyed some aspects of the narration, but some were horrible. The way the narrator did female characters' voices, for example--the candor, dialects, tempo--all horrible. But sometimes the Irish accent and Colfer prose hit just right, and it felt like I was reading a grown-up Half Moon Investigations.

That said, sometimes the main character's ramblings went on far too long, and sometimes the descriptions of a scene or event were the same way. I enjoyed it on several long drives, but it's a mixed bag, and definitely not Colfer's best. I'll still give the sequel a shot though!
