Publisher's summary

Few can rival attorney Andy Carpenter's affection for golden retrievers, especially his own beloved Tara. After he astonishes a New Jersey courtroom by successfully appealing another golden's death sentence, Andy discovers that this gentle dog is a key witness to a murder that took place five years before. Andy pushes the boundaries of the law even further as he struggles to free an innocent man by convincing an incredulous jury to take canine testimony seriously. It will take all the tricks Andy's fertile mind can conceive to get to the bottom of a remarkable chain of impersonations and murder, and to save a dog's life - and his own - in the process.

Rosenfelt loves dogs, I love dogs

I like lawyer books, especially when there's a dog involved. This is a fun story that has some twists and turns.

Grover Gardiner is a great narrator for Rosenfelt's books.

Andy Carpenter novels are my favorite mysteries!!

Love mysteries and detective stories in general, but David Rosenfelt writes the best! I love that they are a good story, with an animal lover satisfaction and humor. And I wouldn't want to hear it from anyone other than Grover Gardner! He has the perfect detective voice.

It Works Wonderfully But Don't Start Here... K?

If you've not discovered Rosenfelt before... sad. But don't discover him with this novel, good as it is. Nope, Andy Carpenter, Rosenfelt's lawyer/sleuth is too interesting to miss him developing right from the first in the series, the novel, Open and Shut. Plus, Grover Gardner's so engagingly captured this character and the wry Rosenfelt humor that it will be a pity if you miss what's come before. My recommendation...read Play Dead... but not until after you've enjoyed Open and Shut and the second in this series, First Degree. Maximize your pleasure. I did and now I'm off to find and download the next Rosenfelt novel. Wheeee!

Andy Carpenter and friends are the best

Love the whole series. Love all of them. Good writing, good mysteries, great characters, good dogs - perfect package. Grover Gardner is so right on for this series I can't come up with enough superlatives - I would have hated to have my favorite mysteries ruined by someone who doesn't get it - Gardner has won my heart by putting across the stories and people beautifully. How many series I can't listen to because of the reader, I hate to say - but this time it's a package to be cherished. We listen to them more than once - just love to hear the words and the voice.

good story; lots of cornballl

But I liked it. It was a pleasant change from the seriousness of courtroom drama. The courtroom scenes, testimony, legal objections, and isues, were genuine, not hokied up for TV. A bit too much on the cheeseball jokes and comments, but laughable nevertheless. Overall good listen.

Dogs of a feather stick together

Any additional comments?

Andy loves Golden Retrievers - all of them - but particularly his own beloved Tara. Andy loves her beyond reason. The case he takes as featured in this book involves Andy's desire to save another Golden. Andy is creative and smart - he can handle this. Great book and it can stand alone or read in order within the series.

Light hearted yet sometimes intense book and series. Fun and entertaining and even better if you are a dog lover. The narrator is fantastic. I really really like him.

Best so far!

The BEST of the series so far. Better and better every book. Love Tara and Reggie. The dogs and the humans who spoil them are most fun. Love every character and their idiosyncrasies. The love story is done tastefully. Great story. The legal proceedings are very interesting and educational. Thanks.

Fellow dog-lover loves this series

Highly recommended. Andy Carpenter is a character who I want to be my friend. Not only is he an exceptional attorney, but he is clever, witty, rich, loyal to his friends, and a dog lover. It cracks me up when he personifies Tara by inserting her thoughts, etc. I appreciate Tara's unselfish behavior by welcoming Reggie into her home. This is a quick listen, throughly enjoyable.
