Publisher's summary

Nathan McBride, “the most brutally effective thriller hero to appear in years” (Ridley Pearson, author of Killer Weekend), returns in the third installment of one of the best new series in thriller fiction.

When Nathan McBride receives a text message from someone who claims she’s been kidnapped, it triggers a deadly chain of events that has the potential to haunt him for the rest of his life. Nathan will soon learn that nothing from his past could ever prepare him for the crisis he’ll soon be facing. The girl’s name is Lauren and she’s just 12 years old. With virtually no experience with children, Nathan’s patience and compassion are about to be tested to their limits.

In a violent confrontation, Nathan rescues Lauren from her kidnapper, but as he unravels Lauren's story, he realizes his troubles are only beginning. She says she's in the Witness Security Program, and doesn't trust the US Marshals because she thinks they're complicit in her abduction. Not only that, her stepdad was murdered last night.

In a desperate and unlikely alliance, Nathan and Lauren must stay one step ahead of her kidnapper and the brutal mercenaries who will kill anyone who gets in their way. Played out over the course of 36 lightning-fast hours, Nathan and Lauren must learn to trust each other or they won’t survive.

Great Story and Narration

Was on the edge of my seat the whole way. Dick Hill's narration is perfect. Don't miss this one.

Excellent book

This book was heartwarming although it was an action story, I found it to be very interesting and I loved how the family accepted each other. I wish I had listened to the first two in order, but I got it as a special price.

Fantastic!

A must listen! So far I have enjoyed each of the Nathan McBride books but this has got to be my favorite. I know I was not disappointed.

Plot could be better

I usually like this series. But I did not enjoy the constant presence of a young child . It took away from the intensity of the plot. If I am indulging in an adult book I prefer adults to be more of it's character. It would have been better if the child was introduced at the beginning. For me it had a negative effect on the otherwise interesting plot . Dick Hill was very enjoyable. All in all it was ok . Not a great listen.

Not as good this time around

I wasn't that grabbed by the story line on this one although it started out pretty good. I got about 2/3rds through and between the slow unfolding of the plot and Dick Hill's performance I couldn't take it anymore. Part of the problem for me is Dick Hill - I know a lot of people love him, but I am not one. Overall he is not bad, but I don't really like his style of narration and when he doesn't fit my vision of how it should be read, I simply lose the ability to finish the listen. In this one, if the story/plot had been a little better, I could have finished. Hopefully I will fair better with the next one.

Good Book

The story was fast moving but too detailed at times. I think a person who is interested in weapons would be okay with those details. There were surprises throughout. Nathan is a great character. I thought the narrator did a terrible job at the female voices. Plus they all sounded alike to me. He was good with men's parts.

Picks up after tedious start

The first couple of hours in this book were hard to get through. The best way I could describe it is a "slow-speed car chase." I'm not a big fan of high-speed car chases so this stepped-down version bordered on brutal. As the venue changed, the book became more palatable. This was my first Nathan McBride listen and I'm likely to try another. It was hard for me to disassociate this listen from the Jack Reacher series, no so much for the character and plot, but because of Dick Hill's narration which was good. The bad guy in this novel was truly bad, which I liked. The plot was somewhat convoluted and strained credulity but, hey, it's a novel. Fans of mystery/thrillers will be satisfied with this listen.

A Good Series

Overall, I like this genre of,,, CIA operative on a critical mission... I also liked the first book in this series, "First to Kill".

I listened to the first book several years ago and saw that this one had very good reviews so I jumped on it without going back and listening to the second one. I enjoyed this book so I don't think you necessarily have to take them in order to gain some enjoyment out of the stories.

While these stories were good and I do like Andrew Peterson's writing style, I don't consider him to be among my favorites in this genre. I save that for Vince Flynn first, Alex Berenson second and then Peterson and others who fall into the "good but not great" category.

Dick Hill does a decent to good job. He has a no-nonsense style, but butchers women and children voices to the point of aggravation.

I recommend, it's worth the time and credit!!
