Publisher's summary

Whether dueling with new forensics or the local old boys' network, irreverent defense attorney Andy Carpenter always leaves them awed with his biting wit and winning fourth-quarter game plan.

But the fun stops the day Andy's dad, Paterson, New Jersey's legendary ex-DA, drops dead in front of him at a game in Yankee Stadium. The shocks pile on as he discovers his dad left him with two unexpected legacies: a fortune of $22 million that Andy never knew existed...and a murder case with enough racial tinder to burn down City Hall.

Struggling to serve justice and bring honor to his father, Andy must dig up some explosive political skeletons - and an astonishing family secret that can close his case (and his mouth) for good.

Crack another case with Andy Carpenter.

A wise-crackin' good time!

The story captures you in five minutes with Rosenfelt's wisenheimer style. He writes the way my family talks so I was intrigued from the get go. But my immediate family was not involved with the law, well not on the right side anyway. This story is about a man and his dog. He's a lawyer that get a case that turns his world sideways.

The story is fast with great turns and twists that you wish you could buy another ticket to ride this roller coster. Turns out you can. Get another book by the author, duh!

Really good book

This book is different from my usual type but it was really good. I normally don't listen to books in 1st person. The characters are fantastic.

Loved it!

I love the Andy Carpenter series. Even though I didn't listen in order, it was great to go back to the beginning and meet Laurie, Willie Miller, and Kevin early on. Willie becomes a favorite character - someone with so much depth and true character - from the death row inmate - as we first met him. Love the relationship between Andy and his beloved Golden Retriever, Tara and definitely the twists and turns in his relationship with Laurie. Grover Gardner's narration to brings Andy to life for me and keeps me wanting to hear every detail as the team solves the case and the associated mystery along the way. If you love the Andy Carpenter series - definitely check out Lessons from Tara and Dogtripping. A huge fan of David Rosenfelt and Andy Carpenter.

Good to read 1st book in series

I am glad the first works of this series has been added. I have really enjoyed all the Andy Carpenter stories and it is great to get the 1st one to fill in some background. The narrator has just the right voice for this story, just enough deadpan for the smart a-- Andy.
