Publisher's summary

Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in. Even after the "outfitter murders," as they have been dubbed by the local press after the discovery of the two more bodies, are solved, Joe continues to investigate, uneasy with the easy explanation offered by the local police.

As Joe digs deeper into the murders, he soon discovers that the outfitter brought more than death to his backdoor: he brought Joe an endangered species, thought to be extinct, which is now living in his woodpile. But if word of the existence of this endangered species gets out, it will destroy any chance of InterWest, a multi-national natural gas company, building an oil pipeline that would bring the company billions of dollars across Wyoming, through the mountains and forests of Twelve Sleep. The closer Joe comes to the truth behind the outfitter murders, the endangered species and InterWest, the closer he comes to losing everything he holds dear.

Good and very entertaining.

This book is perfect entertainment for a long road trip. Couples traveling will find it fine for both...not too macho...not too feminine. Plenty of good storylines for all tastes. I loved the connection to the endangered species act. Naturally, as a biologist myself I am always in favor of preserving wildlife. But the book does a good job of painting the broader picture of the issues involved and the way lives and livelihoods get caught in the struggle to enforce the act. The book had strong characters (I especially loved the young daughter) and just enough violence and suspense to make it a real heart pounder in places. Good narration for all characters.

Seasoned and Tasty

Believable, possible and interesting. I hungered for a bit more wild taste. Toward the end I wasn't finding myself wondering where it would go. I have to admit I haven't finished so may be surprised yet.

Disappointed

Story was ok. Lots of bad language including taking the Lord’s name in vain. We’ve listened to other books by C J and the language wasn’t as overwhelming.

Very entertaining Wyoming-based crime drama

I am a huge new fan and can’t get enough of Joe Pickett and his family. I’m so excited they are making these books into a TV series as well.

Always good when its C.J. Box

Had listened to other C. J. Box books and liked them but had not yet tried any of the Joe Pickett ones. I WA not disappointed with thus first in the series and will certainly continue to listen to many more. if you like Western who done it type books I think you would enjoy this series.

The first C. J. Box book I have read. The story of the trials and tribulations of a Wyoming Game and Fish Warden)Joe Pickett) has caught my attention. Can't wait to read more of this series!!

Fantastic Story!

This was an amazing story and the performance of the narrator is superb one of the best I've heard in a long while. My only warning is that if you are sensitive to the implication of certain topics like pedophilia or harm to the unborn you might want to steel yourself or reconsider before listening.
