Publisher's summary

Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in. Even after the "outfitter murders," as they have been dubbed by the local press after the discovery of the two more bodies, are solved, Joe continues to investigate, uneasy with the easy explanation offered by the local police.

As Joe digs deeper into the murders, he soon discovers that the outfitter brought more than death to his backdoor: he brought Joe an endangered species, thought to be extinct, which is now living in his woodpile. But if word of the existence of this endangered species gets out, it will destroy any chance of InterWest, a multi-national natural gas company, building an oil pipeline that would bring the company billions of dollars across Wyoming, through the mountains and forests of Twelve Sleep. The closer Joe comes to the truth behind the outfitter murders, the endangered species and InterWest, the closer he comes to losing everything he holds dear.

Solid listen.

Good listen. As a Wyoming resident some of the geographic details were a bit distracting as it's hard to imagine where some of the fictional places might be.

Beginning of a great series

I have been a fan of the Joe Pickett series. Recently re read the first book on Audible. The narrator is excellent which is very important in an audiobook. The story holds you till the end. If you enjoy this genre, I don’t think there is a better author than C. J. Box.

I liked it but was really captivated. The first two thirds had some slow parts. I like Joe's character and his integrity.

Great mystery

Love Joe Pickett books. This one has some adult content. Use caution with younger listeners.

Worth Listening

Would you listen to Open Season again? Why?

First book I've listened to by C.J. Box. Reminded me of the Walt Longmire series by Craig Johnson. This was a good story that held my interest. Characters were developed enough so you can relate to their feelings and situation, hate the bad guys and route for the good guy.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Bad guy identity was revealed right away but enough was said to have it narrowed down to a couple of characters.

What aspect of David Chandler’s performance would you have changed?

His performance was fine, but not great. His performance did not detract from the novel. I LOVE George Guidell b/c he does different voices for different characters, and Will Patton is also a favorite of mine since he does the same thing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no

Comfort Food for the Ears (yeah - that gets messy)

What made the experience of listening to Open Season the most enjoyable?

The story was engaging and I enjoyed David Chandler's narration.

What did you like best about this story?

It was incredibly suspenseful and well written.

What about David Chandler’s performance did you like?

He has a pleasing voice that keeps me engaged.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Are you kidding? It's about 7 hours long. My family might get ticked when mom is locked in the bathroom listening to a 7 hour long audiobook. I do have super long commutes, so this really helped make my drive more pleasant.

Any additional comments?

I plan on listening to all the Pickett books now.
