Publisher's summary

When philanthropist Hugo Fletcher’s dead body is discovered tied to a bed in his London home, Chief Inspector Tom Douglas determines right away that he’s hunting a female killer. Though Fletcher made countless enemies through his work with Eastern European prostitutes, the crime scene reeks of sex and revenge. This murder was personal. Douglas knows Fletcher’s unhappy wife, Laura, should be his prime suspect. She’s definitely hiding something. Something big. But he isn’t convinced it’s murder. Besides, she’s not the only woman with a motive to kill the manipulative billionaire. So he digs deeper, into a tangled web of secrets and lies, unraveling the sordid life Fletcher lived outside of the media spotlight.

What he uncovers is shocking, forcing the veteran cop to ask himself: With a man like Fletcher, should the guilty be punished? Or should the innocent be protected?

Not your usual mystery

I was deep into this story which was interesting at the start but it's horrifying twists and turns barely prepared me for the true horror at the conclusion. Well read and produces

A Mind blowing , can't put it down!

This is by far one emotional, twisted and heart pounding story. The narrator did an excellent job and the author is now on my top ten list. Some of it was hard to get through but well worth the money. If you want to have your attention grabbed then this is for you. 😀😀

Best thriller I've read in years!

I hope this review eclipses the nasty one star "Sigh...oh sigh" I saw on the hover window. This was well written, believable, intense and painful. The narration was superb. I've been tricked by star-ratings and reviews in the past. Do not pass this book up.

Overall a great story but the narrator butchered a Canadian accent

I really like this author and the stories she weaves. I love the characters and character development. My only negative feedback is the narrator’s attempts at a Canadian accent were horrible. Every time the character of Imogen spoke, it was like nails on the chalkboard.

Excited for more Tom Douglas

I was hesitant to read this because a friend told me it took a few chapters to get into but I'm glad I did. It does take a little to feel like "you can't put it down" but once you get there it's great. I'm onto the next book in the Tom Douglas series which is the back road. Excited for more...

Not what I expected

I had an uncomfortable time with this book from the beginning. I couldn't decide if I liked it or not. Now that I've finished it, I still have the same question.

I enjoy British police stories. Good British police stories. And there several authors with remarkable series. I can't put this in the same category. I like to read about the interaction of the CID team - the investigation that gets them from crime to solution. I don't like being given all the information (in this case through unsent letters.)

This is labeled as the "DCI Tom Douglas" series but he played a small part in this book. We got to know a bit about him but I wanted more about him and less of the spoon feeding of the facts leading up to the murder. And I found the finish unsettling.

I rating it as high as I did because it kept me reading. I just expected better.

Torn from the headlines

The description of the domestic violence and emotional / sexual sadism were very deftly done so readers be warned.

The ending has a nice twist

Unexpectedly great

The twist and turns kept me up late turning the pages! I loved all the characters and was glad to be part of the investigation.

well written

Plot was not remarkably good, but told in a way that kept me wanting to know what happens next. Some really emotional parts, trigger warning for abuse survivors.
