Publisher's summary

When philanthropist Hugo Fletcher’s dead body is discovered tied to a bed in his London home, Chief Inspector Tom Douglas determines right away that he’s hunting a female killer. Though Fletcher made countless enemies through his work with Eastern European prostitutes, the crime scene reeks of sex and revenge. This murder was personal. Douglas knows Fletcher’s unhappy wife, Laura, should be his prime suspect. She’s definitely hiding something. Something big. But he isn’t convinced it’s murder. Besides, she’s not the only woman with a motive to kill the manipulative billionaire. So he digs deeper, into a tangled web of secrets and lies, unraveling the sordid life Fletcher lived outside of the media spotlight.

What he uncovers is shocking, forcing the veteran cop to ask himself: With a man like Fletcher, should the guilty be punished? Or should the innocent be protected?

Amazing!

Thoroughly entertaining..bit slow to start but so worth it! I have never written a review but was so impressed with this book that I had to. I have read more suspense books than I can count. I don't remember another time when I was completely surprised by the last secret revealed. I almost always have a pretty good idea and am never really surprised, though I may have enjoyed the book...Actually, sometimes that's the fun of it..solving the puzzle...but it was awesome to actually get something I didn't see coming.

Loved the story ... Hated the narrator

Would you consider the audio edition of Only the Innocent to be better than the print version?

I think with this book I rather would have read it. The narrators voice, especially the male parts, really annoyed me to the point that I stopped listening for a few times. The story got me hooked though.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Only the Innocent?

I loved the story

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The male parts were very very very irritating. I almost gave up listening to the book a few times. Luckily the storyline was enough to keep me going.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors ..

Any additional comments?

I really love Rachel Abbotts books and I will probably listen to the other books in this series. But this book ... I will probably give it a miss due to Sarah Coomes narrating Hugo

Did not want to do Anything Else!

I could not get to work on time or sleep at a decent hour for wanting to know what was happening next. I even tried to steal away moments in meetings to continue to keep up. Gripping. Literally.

Wow! What a story teller

Amazing detail, original, so many twists & turns. No boring cookie cutter work here, no repetitive fluff, just solid story telling. A page turner start to finish. Rachael Abbott is now in my top 5 writers. Can't wait for more by this amazing author.

Creepy and Spellbinding

More than just a mystery, this book is a page-turner, with complex characters and believable clues. Now I want to read more by the same author. Some similarities with Stieg Larsson. Great performance by Sarah Coomes. Each character was recognizable and the accents believable.

Least Favorite in the Series

Thankfully I didn’t start on with this book. In fact, I’ve done about 4 others before doing this one. If I had, I would never have done another in this series or by this author.
This is not really a detective story, nor a suspense. It’s a drama with romantic overtones and a murder that occurred, and the unfolding of life that precipitates this murder. To be honest, this book was at least 4 hours too long. There was way too much dribbling and moaning. The story could have been conveyed with a serious edit and cut job. Tom is not like Tom in future series books. He is Lina me enough. BUT I HATED THE NARRATOR’s voice for Tom. I also didn’t care for Emijean(?) accent. I also didn’t like Hugo’s voice. Between the unnecessary length, the moaning, and the accents, I was going to just stop reading it. The story was decent enough and worth telling, just wish it was a bit different. And side note, who has such open incriminating conversations without checking that the police are still not in your house?
I will say the rest of the series is Soooo much better. So don’t let this one throw you off.

annoying narrator, "posh accent" terrible

annoying narrator, "posh accent" terrible, decent story, interesting twists, nice use of psychological justification for character behavior.
