Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Only a handful of fictional characters are recognized by first name alone. Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas is one such literary hero, who has come alive in listeners’ imaginations as he explores the greatest mysteries of this world and the next with his inimitable wit, heart, and quiet gallantry. Now Koontz follows Odd as he is drawn onward, to a destiny he cannot imagine. Haunted by dreams of an all-encompassing red tide, Odd is pulled inexorably to the sea, to a small California coastal town where nothing is as it seems.

Figure it out as we go

I love the characters and dry humor. Odd gets a little too philosophical from time to time but the action is fun and quirky. I may have called the feds in a little earlier and had some fun with those interactions but I get that odd is just making it up as he goes. I also really wanted the coyotes to join the fight a little more actively. Fun read

there's worse - but I'm sad

Take any Odd Thomas book, make it shorter, act like you're tired of the character, the formula and the spirit of the thing - and you have what appears to be DK's feelings about this one. It felt rushed. Abridged. Like TV instead of a nice visit with OThomas. Then again, I haven't found anything much better lately either... so it could have been worse.

Better than book 3

Brother Odd was soooo out there that, even for a book about seeing dead people, it was unbelievable...although I liked some of the characters.

Odd Hours is back in reality (so to speak) with real people doing bad things. However, perhaps a little ridiculously bad.

I really liked the fact that Koontz has Odd interacting with real people, but I agree with others that it seems too short...almost rushed.

Finally, as always, the book is extremely well read by David Aaron Baker.

A bit of a letdown

After having thoroughly enjoyed the first 3 Odd books, I was really looking forward to this one. I felt that Mr Koontz just dashed off an idea that he'd not really considered very deeply. When Odd Thomas saves the world through twarting the bad guys' plans I kept expecting him to either don a cape or wake up from his silly dream. I hope the next installment goes back in the direction of the first 3.

Another wonderful book

I really liked the way Dean Koontz wrote this in the first person and referenced the previous books as well. Entertaining and enjoyable.

Not as good as the rest

I was so glad to see odd back again. I don't regret purchasing this book since I really enjoy both the main character and the narrator-but it is not as interesting as the first books.

Excellent

Jumps right to the point and sticks with it. More thrilling and satisfying than Brother Odd; feels like a true successor to Forever Odd. The climax is glorious; I don't want to spoil anything, but it's a fantastic mix of action, drama, and comedy. A must-read.

My only complaint with Odd Hours is one scene where Odd is talking to a femme fatale, which Koontz wrote in a noir style. It is so severely incongruous with the rest of the novel (and the previous novels) that it's as jarring as a slap to the face. Then the scene ends and everything returns to normal.

Very good addition to the series :D

4 Stars

This was a very good addition to the Odd Thomas series. Odd is living in a small beach front community called Magic Beach, working as a live-in cook to an old film star, Hutch Hutchenson. He felt himself drawn to Magic Beach but didn't know why. What he does know is that he's been having dreams of the beach and sky being suffused in a red glow and it seems to be a premonition of massive destruction. Of course, Odd finds himself in the center of a conspiracy where a number of people are scheming to bring death and destruction to the US on massive scale and Odd is the only one that can stop them. This isn't easy though, since his psychic gift isn't always informative and the bad guys aren't happy to have their plans known and stopped. Odd does manage to stop the destruction but it costs him. In this story, Odd becomes involved with a young woman named Annmarie (it's completely platonic) who he ends up becoming responsible for. She accompanies him when he leaves town and seems important in Odd's upcoming adventures.

This was a very enjoyable addition to the series. Odd is such a great guy and takes his responsibilities so seriously...I only wish there are people out there in the world looking out for us like Odd does in the books. I love this series and would recommend it. :D
