Audie Award Nominee, Best Thriller/Suspense Category, 2013

Once presided over by a flamboyant Hollywood mogul during the Roaring ’20s, the magnificent West Coast property known as Roseland is now home to a reclusive billionaire financier and his faithful servants. And, for the moment, it’s also a port in the storm for Odd Thomas and his traveling companion, the inscrutably charming Annamaria.

In the wake of Odd’s most recent clash with lethal adversaries, the opulent manor’s comforts should be welcome. But there’s far more to Roseland than meets even the extraordinary eye of Odd, who soon suspects it may be more hell than haven.

A harrowing taste of Roseland’s terrors convinces Odd that it’s time to hit the road again. Still, the prescient Annamaria insists that they’ve been led there for a reason. Just how deep and dreadful are the mysteries Roseland and her masters have kept for nearly a century? And what consequences await whoever is brave, or mad, enough to confront the most profound breed of evil? Odd only knows. Like his acclaimed creator, the irresistible Odd Thomas is in top-notch form - as he takes on what may well be the most terrifying challenge yet in his curious career.

Back On Track?

Would you try another book from Dean Koontz and/or David Aaron Baker?

I have been a fan of Dean Koontz for over 20 years. I will continue to listen and/read his work.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The end of this book was a bit predictable, but still entertaining.

Have you listened to any of David Aaron Baker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have a lot of audiobooks by various authors and narrators. I have a lot of audios read by David Aaron Baker and I am never disappointed by his work.

Any additional comments?

I hope that this book is a sign that Dean Koontz is getting The Odd Series back on track. The mystery of the eternally pregnant woman who calls herself Annamaria, is getting old. But this book does give hope to this series finding a direction.

I just hope it doesn't fizzle like the Moonlight Bay Trilogy that stalled after book 2

Curious Listen

What did you like best about Odd Apocalypse? What did you like least?

It was a very intriguing story and was my first Dean Kootz book. I was rather confused about everything that was occurring for the first quarter of the story; a problem which I don't think I would have had if I was physically reading it. However I eventually started to understand what I was hearing and became intrigued with the fantasy and history incorporated into the book.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I definitely enjoyed the Nicola Tesla references and history that was incorporated.

Do you think Odd Apocalypse needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I thought there was... if there isn't, then most definitely to find out what happens to the characters.

Not my favorite Odd Thomas

I love the Odd Thomas series and I think the narrator is great. This story was not my favorite in the series though and I can't quite put my finger on why. I just didn't seem as tight a story as the others, as if sections were missing, Nothing that hindered understanding the story but more explanation and depth to the characters, particularly with the woman character. Maybe she'll be a recurring character and be given more depth in future books.

I love Odd but not Tessla or time travel!

Would you try another book from Dean Koontz and/or David Aaron Baker?

I have read the previous Odd books and the Frankenstein series and loved them.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I haven't made it to the end yet, I have been forced to read this in stages...

What does David Aaron Baker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

David sounds like I would have imagined Odd sounds.

Do you think Odd Apocalypse needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Will not know 'til I reach the end.

Oddly Unsatisfying

I’ve enjoyed the Odd series, but it seems to be moving from entertaining to average. Mr. Koontz seems to have some issues with modern day society and he uses Odd to voice all of his complaints. He has done some of this in all of the Odd books but it seems to gotten out of control and has become quite distracting. It would be great if Knoontz could get back to the form of some of his earlier work like “Out the Corner of His Eye” or “The Face” where he would take time to build suspense and develop his characters.

Spoiler alert: One of my other complaints about this story is Tesla. It seems like anytime an author needs to create a unusual machine or some piece science fiction machinery they simple pull out Nikola Tesla to give it creditability. I know he is a fascinating person, but why not invent a new mad scientist.

Visit Roseland

Time travel is a tricky thing to write. Dean Koontz did just fine to me.

Good to see and hear the Odd one again

Would you listen to Odd Apocalypse again? Why?

Yes, probably because it was a quick story and did not lag so it would make a good "revisit".

What did you like best about this story?

The interesting characters at Roseland. They were a good illustration of how mucking about with science can get you into trouble.

Which character – as performed by David Aaron Baker – was your favorite?

I've always liked Mr. Baker's rendition of Odd, but Kenny was some good comedic relief in this story as well.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, but none of the other Odd Thomas series has made me laugh or cry either. It was a good read, always interesting and had a very good pace.

Any additional comments?

I'm looking forward to the next Odd Thomas adventure. I think it is really interesting timing that Odd should run into Hitch at just the same time as two mvies about the "master" are hitting the screen. Bring out the next one soon!
