"It's always a treat to read a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore." (The New York Times)
"What's not to like about a Nero Wolfe mystery? The mysteries are short, cleverly plotted, well paced, and, if you're an audiobook listener, wonderfully read by Michael Prichard....Prichard has read nearly 20 books in Stout's series and has mastered Wolfe's deep, meditative voice and Archie's spry, chipper voice, as well as those of a host of other characters we recognize from one recording to the next." I focus on fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, science, history, politics and read a lot. I try to review everything I read.
This is really two novella, Not Quite Dead Enough and Booby Trap. Both are set during WWII and Archie is a Major in the US Army. These stories both have unique twists making them a must read for any follower of Archie and Nero. These are both quite unusual Nero Wolfe stories. The stories themselves are not the best, but the odd character situation and events make these stories very well worth reading. They should not be among the first read. The narration is excellent as usual.
Another interesting look at the Nero Wolfe household in trying circumstances and how they changed their lifestyles to adapt, this time to the war against Germany in WWII.
As I see Nero Wolfe in my mind's eye, I never picture him jogging on the piers of NY, readying himself to go "kill some Germans". This story is quirky, to say the least. But it is also vintage Nero Wolfe and a great snapshot of wartime America in WWII.
Almost, my Nero Wolf's voice ....close. Archi was great! These are two shorter stories. Both different but all " Nero Wolf" A bit. different having Archi in a uniform as the second takes place in the beginning of WWII .
Micheal Pritchard IS Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Nobody does Wolfe better.
The Black Mountain where we see Wolfe step out of his comfort zone and tackle problems in a new yet totally Wolfe way.
All of them. Performance is spot on.
The Technical quality is at best odd. To much Bass and the gain was way up, what was the engineer doing? No pop filter on the Mic it seems but that may just be a static pop.
Please watch the Dials. This is the only one that i noticed this way, so far. And the ability to review parts is also hampered.
But it is Nero Wolfe and Archie. Loved the Story and the performance.
Michael Prichard as Archie Goodwin
Rex would turn over in his grave if I messed with his mystery.
Nero has my vote every time.
