Not Quite Dead Enough | [Rex Stout]

Not Quite Dead Enough

World War II has arrived, and U.S. Army intelligence wants Nero Wolfe urgently. But the arrogant, gourmandizing, sedentary sleuth refuses the call to duty. It takes his perambulatory, confidential assistant, Archie Goodwin, to titillate Wolfe's taste for crime with two malevolent morsels: a corpse that won't rest in peace and a sinister "accident" involving national security. So as Goodwin lays the bait on the wrong side of the law, Wolfe sets the traps to catch a pair of wily killers.

What the Critics Say

"It's always a treat to read a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore." (The New York Times)
"What's not to like about a Nero Wolfe mystery? The mysteries are short, cleverly plotted, well paced, and, if you're an audiobook listener, wonderfully read by Michael Prichard....Prichard has read nearly 20 books in Stout's series and has mastered Wolfe's deep, meditative voice and Archie's spry, chipper voice, as well as those of a host of other characters we recognize from one recording to the next." "Odd and Just OK, but a Must Read for Wolfe Buffs"

This is really two novella, Not Quite Dead Enough and Booby Trap. Both are set during WWII and Archie is a Major in the US Army. These stories both have unique twists making them a must read for any follower of Archie and Nero. These are both quite unusual Nero Wolfe stories. The stories themselves are not the best, but the odd character situation and events make these stories very well worth reading. They should not be among the first read. The narration is excellent as usual.

    "Satisfactory!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Not Quite Dead Enough to be better than the print version?

Micheal Pritchard IS Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Nobody does Wolfe better.

What other book might you compare Not Quite Dead Enough to and why?

The Black Mountain where we see Wolfe step out of his comfort zone and tackle problems in a new yet totally Wolfe way.

Have you listened to any of Michael Prichard’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

All of them. Performance is spot on.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    certainly!

    "Great Story bad technical quality"
Would you try another book from Rex Stout and/or Michael Prichard?

    yes

Did Michael Prichard do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

    yes

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    yes

    Any additional comments?

The Technical quality is at best odd. To much Bass and the gain was way up, what was the engineer doing? No pop filter on the Mic it seems but that may just be a static pop.
Please watch the Dials. This is the only one that i noticed this way, so far. And the ability to review parts is also hampered.

But it is Nero Wolfe and Archie. Loved the Story and the performance.

    "As always Rex is engaging"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    Michael Prichard as Archie Goodwin

Would you ever listen to anything by Rex Stout again?

    Absolutely

Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Prichard’s performances?

    Yes

What character would you cut from Not Quite Dead Enough?

Rex would turn over in his grave if I messed with his mystery.

    Any additional comments?

Nero has my vote every time.
