Editorial reviews

Amanda Ronconi narrates this humorous mystery with the vocal equivalent of an eye roll. While she doesn’t sound bored, she certainly sounds annoyed. But imagine her character’s predicament: She’s purchased an old crumbling Victorian on the Jersey shore, she’s fixing it up into a guesthouse, her precocious nine-year-old is hectoring, and now she finds out the Victorian is haunted!

Admittedly contrived, over-the-top, and including references that will be dated unto obscurity within the next decade or sooner, Night of the Living Deed seeks to achieve only one thing: Your temporary laughter and merriment at - or with - Ronconi’s eye-rolling voice.

Publisher's summary

Welcome to the first Haunted Guest House mystery - the getaway every reader can afford.

Newly divorced Alison Kerby wants a second chance for herself and her nine-year-old daughter. She's returned to her hometown on the Jersey Shore to transform a Victorian fixer-upper into a charming-and profitable guest house. One small problem: the house is haunted, and the two ghosts insist Alison must find out who killed them.

Good Narrator and Good Story

I've been listening to quite a few cozy mystery series recently but none of them matched the tone and quality I have been seeking in the genre.

The author, perhaps a reader of cozy mysteries as well, is well-versed in the tropes often found among its ilk. For example, she builds up the romantic interest as a gorgeous, witty adonis but as she gets to know him he speaks obsessively about history almost to a fault.

On the other hand however, the author does fall into the trap of having a child character who is both precocious and wise but also naive about seemingly basic things to the point of inconsistency.

Overall, the repartee narrative style the author adopts combined with a competent narrator who nails the timing and has a distinct enough range of voices makes this an easy and entertaining listen.

Fun and Full of Quirky Characters

If you are looking for a traditional "ghost story" this book isn't for you. It is a book for someone who enjoys quirky characters and a humorous plot. The story is told in first person and the narrator does an awesome job bringing her to life. She is a bit sassy and a bit sarcastic and it doesn't take long for the listener to become enamored of her. If you are looking for a light and humorous mystery this will meet your needs!
