Publisher's summary

Sled dog racer Jessie Arnold stars in a series that's "suspenseful, intelligent, and filled with the spectacular beauty of the northern wilds" ( Dallas Morning News). Her friends, Laurie and Jim, have acquired their dream, an old lighthouse on the Alaskan Inside Passage, and invited everyone to a party. Not a party in the typical sense, but one where guests earn their keep by restoring the old building.

With the company of old friends, the smell of fresh paint, and a view to die for, this is one weekend Jessie won't soon forget...especially when a guest ends up dead. At first, the death seems like an accident, but when someone cuts the phone and radio connections, Jessie realizes there's a killer loose on the island.

Critic reviews

"Alternating chapters from Jessie's and the stalker's points of view keep motives hidden and readers guessing as the plot moves briskly along." (Booklist)

A little rocky

I am a huge Sue Henry fan and have both read and listened to all of her previous books, both the Jessie Arnold/Alex Jensen mysteries and the Maxie McNabb mysteries. All previous audiobooks have been recorded by one narrator- not the narrator of this audiobook. Having a new voice with this book was jarring. Additionally, the narration was not at all smooth. She was reading a book, like I would read aloud to my children. She wasn't bringing the story alive. There was often emphasis in wrong parts of the sentences which jerked me out of the story and made me newly aware of the narrator. She also varied between pronouncing the name Knapp with a hard K and with a silent K. Similarly she did not familiarize herself with the correct pronunciation of some of the Alaskan place names. I was so excited to finally find a Sue Henry on audible.com, but I had a hard time finishing it.

Only for the Whales

Having recently been in the Alaska Inland Passage, I thought this was worth a try. And, because of my own good memories, it was, if only for the location and the whales.

There's some decent intrigue here, as well. But the entire work is marred by the really terrible reading of the story. Meaning that this narrator only READS the book, and with not a lot of interest or enthusiasm at that.

I can only recommend this book if you have a thing for remote lighthouses and/or the magnificent Inland Passage of Alaska.

Close and Play recording would be better

The quality of this book is shameful on every level. The dialogue and plot are week anyway and are further weakened by the reader who is about as exciting as Jack Benny falling asleep. It is the worst recording I've purchased of probably 15 books from Audible.

Borriinng!

I downloaded this title along with two others, because the storyline sounded intriguing (what's better than a murder mystery at a lighthouse?). I blame myself for not having listened to a sample or read the previous customer review first. I have never experienced a recorded book narrator more monotone and droning as Ms. Snell. As the previous reviewer stated, it was like being read (mechanically) a book. No intonation, no emphasis, no dramatization, no feeling. I'm sure Ms. Snell has talents, but I'm afraid they lie elsewhere than that of narration. I will not purchase another title read by her.

Cliche, Predictable, juvenile writing,

Except that it was about Alaska, about which I wanted to learn more, this book is really bad all the way around. The writing is childish, cliche and predictable.I would not recommend it.

This was o e of the books that I had to listen to

It was an OK book but it did not hold my interest long at a time. I have several other books by the author. This one just did not hold my interest. Even now I am unable to pin down what the problem is though.

Fun Read!

Easy reading, fun mystery. Several friends from previous books are stuck on a lighthouse island, murders begin, cell phones disappear, freaky woman on board. Whew, saved by Alex Johnson, state trooper. Characters are familiar, except for the bad guys, plenty of Alaskan atmosphere: eagles, whales, but alas, no dog mushing. The book makes you want to go help restore the lighthouse.
