Publisher's summary

Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and Sergeant Gemma James are sent to suburban Surrey to investigate the murder of a high-ranking police officer. Alastair Gilbert was bludgeoned to death in his kitchen, and the list of potential suspects is long--the man's arrogance earned him widespread enmity both in the village where he lived, and in police circles. But Duncan and Gemma must put aside their personal feelings--for the victim, as well as for each other--to solve the most troubling case either has faced.

Loved this Book!

First of all, to understand this book fully, you really need to read the first three in the series. However, this one is the best of the first four. We get to see Kincaid and Gemma do a lot of investigating in this one. This is a tough case. Nearly everyone who knew this dead man can be a suspect. He was pompous, mean, and cruel to everybody he knew. Yet clues are difficult to fit together. The villagers are close friends and it appears no one wants to speak ill of a fellow villager. The question is, would they shelter a murderer? Kincaid and Gemma have to use all their skills to sort this out. On top of that, Kincaid and Gemma have to figure out their own relationship, which might be the hardest puzzle of all. I guarantee you will love this book. I can't wait to start on book 5!

Another good one

Love this series. Not a cozy series but a good British mystery with excellent characters. Stepping into their lives with each installment is a pleasure.

Narrator gets a little silly with Gemma‘s voice

Overall I like Michael Deehy’s narration, but for some reason,in this book, he got a little twee with the voice of Gemma. The story is good, and complex with lots of twists and turns and amazing attention to detail. And the development of their relationship is well done as well.

Plot somewhat predictable but…

I love these characters. Though this one was easy to predict story wise. That said, having enjoyed the first four, I plan to keep reading to see how it all evolves.

Great listen!

Good story and good narration. Well worth a credit. One of those books you can read again next year and enjoy the second time around.

Life of secure and enriching police work vs home love and possible family

Life and love fighting for job and families, Ms Crombie displays the struggles of family and job plus the darkness of mistaken demands of the world of London in the sixties and seventies—well-written’ and an open door to the hearts of people and their insecure wars that they must out-grow and face their fears- jealousy and human frailties-murder-evil - anger—mentally deranged- and love! Great Read!

Interesting story

Narrator was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed the colloquialisms of the area. I only had 1 problem that I didn't think one murder was solved.

Really like this series.

Written in a way that brings people to life with all there wrong turns and right ones, bumbled communications, hopes and dreams, dissapointments, sorrows, and happy realizations. All this while untangling the threads of a murder. Both captivating and satisfying. Good stuff!
