Publisher's summary

Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and Sergeant Gemma James are sent to suburban Surrey to investigate the murder of a high-ranking police officer. Alastair Gilbert was bludgeoned to death in his kitchen, and the list of potential suspects is long--the man's arrogance earned him widespread enmity both in the village where he lived, and in police circles. But Duncan and Gemma must put aside their personal feelings--for the victim, as well as for each other--to solve the most troubling case either has faced.

I am really enjoying this series

What made the experience of listening to Mourn Not Your Dead the most enjoyable?

I enjoy this book and this series because for me it balances the best of the old fashioned mysteries (Christie, Allingham, Sayers) with the more realistic and psychological aspects of recent mysteries. The characters have depth and the stories look at difficult issues, and in the end I feel good and hopeful about the world. I think this is a conscious choice of the author. She has characters discuss old mysteries in several books and she talks about how mysteries can renew our faith in justice and the potential power and influence of individuals. For me, these books do that.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love both Duncan and Gemma. I like the way their relationship is developing. For me there is a nice balance. We see their struggles and faults and mistakes, and we also see them learn from them. I for one feel hopeful.

What about Michael Deehy’s performance did you like?

I forget I am listening to a narrator. I am just in the story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

None that I can describe without risking "spoiling" it for others, but I will say, I felt much empathy for several characters throughout.

Any additional comments?

Really good solid mystery series. I have yet to guess an ending . Each story is a good mystery and I am enjoying getting to know Duncan and Gemma as the series progresses.

Excellent!

I have listened to eight of the Jemma James/Duncan Kincaid books and I've loved every one of them!

The characters are well defined and interesting. The locations are described in a way that I am able to picture them in my mind. The mysteries are complex. These are books that I could listen to in one sitting. However, I try not to do that because I don't want them to end.

There is a personal relationship between Duncan and Jemma, but these are not romance stories disguised as mysteries. Their relationship is imperfect (as is often the case in real life). However, they deal with their problems in a mature and loving way,

I love Michael Deehy's narration. As I listen it is always clear to me who is speaking and what is going on and I almost forget there is a "narrator". To me that is excellent narration.

Great listen!

Good story and good narration. Well worth a credit. One of those books you can read again next year and enjoy the second time around.

More Relationship than Mystery

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, I would recommend Mourn Not Your Dead, but would indicate that some of her other works were better.

If you’ve listened to books by Deborah Crombie before, how does this one compare?

This one is not as good as And Justice There was None or Leave the Green

What three words best describe Michael Deehy’s voice?

Pleasant, well paced, but not always clear. It might be the recording, not his voice that is not clear.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

A slow start that finished well

What did you love best about Mourn Not Your Dead?

The ending of the book was much better than I expected it to be. I don't want to spoil anything for the readers, so that is all I'll say.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not necessarily on the edge of my seat, but very curious. I was drawn into the story and wanted to know "what happens next?" I was not disappointed!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, but I was happy to know that this cozy mystery would be waiting for me when I had time to listen.

Any additional comments?

I look forward to reading (listening) to more books by both the author and narrator. Thank you for an enjoyable time!

Definately Worth the Read or Listen

I like this book becasue it exposed me to the English culture very simply & effectively. The story was very interesting & kept my attention too. I like books like this that read out like a Sherlock Holmes mystery, always connecting the dots. Being a part of the detectives search was also educational. If I were a reader who likes a good mystery novel I would say the audible book is the best choice, because you get that charming English accent as a bonus.

Loved it. Didn't want it to end but couldn't wait to find what happened between the two detectives.

Came for the free new mystery, stayed for the lead characters

The mysteries are very good in this series but I require more than good plotting. This series also has interesting locations but, most of all, engaging leads. I will definitely follow them to their next case. Thank you, Audible, for reviving this series. Looking ahead I see different narrators. I hope they will preserve Duncan’s seductive tone. Irresistible.
