Midnight Fugue | [Reginald Hill]

Midnight Fugue

It starts with a phone call to Superintendent Dalziel from an old friend asking for help. But where it ends is a very different story. Gina Wolfe has come to Mid-Yorkshire in search of her missing husband, believed dead. Her fiance, Commander Mick Purdy of the Met, thinks Dalziel should be able to take care of the job. What none of them realize is how events set in motion decades ago will come to a violent head on this otherwise ordinary summer's day.

"Another remarkable visit with Andy Dalziel"

Hill is simply amazing. Each novel in this series is an adventure in shifting perspective and innovative technique yet the characters remain as comfortable as a well-loved pair of Nike trainers. I hope Mr. Hill lives - and writes - forever!

    "Too urban"

I do not like gangster mysteries. I guess I like my mysteries driven by other things besides urban gangsters, because, like the stupid vampire mysteries , it is too easy to throw in any resolution to problem and not develop characters.
I do not like any of the characters in this book.

    "Excellent"

I never fancied the television series and so I would probably never had read this had I not read The Woodcutter by the same author . Now I'm hooked. I found it difficult to stop listening to, loved the characters and the storyline and thought it had a very satisfactory ending. Perfect in fact from start to finish.

"If you liked The Woodcutter, you'll love this"

An excellent book with the same narrator as The Woodcutter. Fast paced and well written. You do not have to have any prior knowledge of Dalziel to enjoy it. I would definitely recommend it.

    "Briliant, entertaining book."

This was the first Dalziel and Pascoe I have listened to and it didn't disappoint. I had just finished listening to The Woodcutter read by Jonathan Keeble and I picked this book because it was the same narrator. The story keeps you interested from the beginning and you feel like you know the characters really well. The plot and ending are brilliant and I listened to the last chapter several times. I now want to listen to more Dalziel and Pascoe.

    "Pedestrian"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

    I can't imagine

What could Reginald Hill have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

It seemed to be written in short sentences with no narrative. He said, she said..........

How could the performance have been better?

I don't know if he could have done better with a better story but it was extremely boring

    Any additional comments?

I read the woodcutter by this author and loved it but this seemed to go on forever and was only mildly interesting in the last chapter when it came to fruition

    "Classic Dalziel and Pascoe"
What did you like most about Midnight Fugue?

For the most part this was classic Dalziel and Pascoe - Dalziel blusters, seems to be putting his foot in everything and Pascoe follows the rules and keeps the case from falling apart despite Fat Andy's best efforts. But of course Dalziel is not as stupid as he seems and the case gets solved in the end.
I always enjoy the relationship between Dalziel and Pascoe, although I also enjoy the fact that Pascoe is still married to Ellie in the books (unlike the tv series where they're divorced) and there's always a sub-plot around them that's usually quite amusing.

    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this book. Reginald Hill's use of language always makes me laugh out loud and this was no exception. The performance by Jonathan Keeble was just right. Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.
