Publisher's summary

Michael Robotham's Suspect, hailed as "a lightning-paced debut" by Entertainment Weekly, was an international best seller that raised the bar for thrillers. Now two characters from that acclaimed novel, Detective Vincent Ruiz and psychologist Joe O'Loughlin, return for the electrifying Lost. When Detective Ruiz is pulled from the Thames, he has a bullet in his leg, a photograph of a missing (and presumed dead) girl in his pocket, and absolutely no memory of what happened.

Meh

This was not my favorite in this series but the series does get much better as it goes along. I'm finding that some of the books in this series can be stand alone reads but as always, it is better if you are familiar with the characters. I read this as a buddy read with Mary and she liked it very much.

Good but a little slow

This was another good mystery, but a little slow in spots. I did guess some of the ending…..

Another stress filled mystery/thriller!

The main character in this book is Vincent Ruiz instead of Joe O'Loughlin. It starts as Ruiz is fished out of the Thames injured and with no memory of what has happened. Joe is present throughout, helping Ruiz to recover his memory and solve the mystery he was pursuing. Unfortunately, that case was closed with a conviction several years ago. The police want him off the case, threaten him with criminal proceedings, and finally suspend/fire him. In addition, someone is trying to kill him. He won't let go and eventually sees it through to its resolution.

Once again, Robothom has created a mystery thriller that piles stress after stress on the main character. How he maintains his sanity, stays alive, and manages to solve the mystery make for an involved and entertaining listen.

I believe that this book can stand alone; it is not necessary to read the first one to pick up the story line or the characters. I plan to move on to book three.

The narration is appropriate for the material. The story creates enough stress without having the narrator adding more.

Ehhh....

Not bad but I never finished it. I just kind of didnt care anymore. And by not finish I mean I abandoned it with only an hour or so to go. I think I had kind of figured it out on my own and that was good enough for me. So, good story but not compelling enough to finish....?

Hooked on Lost

This is the third Michael Robotham book I've read and it did not disappoint. He's one of the only crime authors I've read that has kept me guessing right to the end. I can't wait to pick up the next one.

Great read!!!

I was thrilled to find out there were more books in this story line. I like that we get to hear Ruiz' perspective this time around. The reader has fantastic voices for all the characters. A really great read!

This author is FABULOUS!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would for many reasons. The story keeps you guessing right up until the end. The characters are quirky, likable and entertaining. The narrator brought them all to life and kept the momentum flowing, from beginning to end.

What other book might you compare Lost to and why?

I love a good detective thriller that keeps you guessing without the entanglement of a love interest.

Have you listened to any of Ray Lonnen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I have not but certainly WILL in the future!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, it was a thrill ride. No tears but lots of smiles.

Any additional comments?

Yes ... I listened to this book for 2 days AND am downloading book 3 as I write this review.*** listen to them in order***

Taut, Thoughtful ... a good 2nd book!

A while back I read (and loved) Robotham’s debut, The Suspect, which introduced the characters Dr Joseph O'Loughlin and Vincent Ruiz. Lost continues to feature O'Loughlin and Ruiz. But in this installment the story is being told by Vincent Ruiz instead of Joseph O’Loughlin, and Ruiz is a much more abrasive. It took me a few chapters to adjust to the change.

In the first scene of the book Vincent Ruiz is being pulled out of the Thames. He was shot, and the bullet passed through his leg. He awakens from surgery to find that he has no memory of the incident or of the week leading up to it. He is determined to find out how he was shot and why. This is where Dr O’laughlin comes in, helping Ruiz to determine on which case he was working. They determine that he was working on an old, closed case that involved the disappearance of 8 year old Mickey Carlyle. Unfortunately Mickey is dead and the man who killed her is in prison. So why was he there to make a kidnapping payoff?

This is the entire mystery. Why was Ruiz shot? Why was he working on this old case? Why can’t he remember? Robotham sets a slower pace allowing the reader to feel Ruiz’ frustration. The two men have a strong rapport and in this installment Robotham introduced A young female officer, Alisha Barba. She is a stong character and acts as a sounding board for Ruiz. She played a prominent role in the book and i hope that means she will be back for book 3 in the series.

mmm, mixed feelings

I really enjoyed the end, and some of the twists and turns it took getting there. however, it really drug on for a long time in the beginning and middle. it was challenging to get through for me, although I'm really glad I did because it had a great ending.!
