Dying is what changed Mary O'Reilly's life. Well, actually, coming back from the dead and having the ability to communicate with ghosts is really what did it.

Now, a private investigator in rural Freeport, Illinois, Mary's trying to learn how to incorporate her experience as a Chicago cop and new-found talent into a real job. Her challenge is to solve the mysteries, get real evidence (a ghost's word just doesn't hold up in court), and be sure the folks in town, especially the handsome new police chief, don't think she's nuts.

Twenty-four years ago, a young woman drowned in the swimming pool of a newly elected state senator. It was ruled an accident. But now, as the senator prepares to move on to higher positions, the ghost of the woman is appearing to the Senator's wife.

Mary is hired to discover the truth behind the death. She unearths a connection between the murder and the disappearance of five little girls whose cases, 24 years later, are still all unsolved. As she digs further, she becomes the next target for the serial killers' quest to tie up all his loose ends.

Absolutely love reading this collection. Very disappointed in narrator. Very flat, no emotion. Only got to about chapter 2 and had to stop. Will reread book again. Sorry

"I'm Ready for the Next Book in the Series"

I'm normally reluctant to buy an audiobook that is performed by someone new. But, Erin Spencer was better than I had expected. The male characters sounded a little goofy, and I would have preferred it if she had sped up her reading just a tad bit, or maybe I'm just being too picky. I think she has the potential to be a really awesome narrator with a few minor adjustments.

As far as the story goes...

I really enjoyed the characters. I know there are plenty of paranormal mystery books out there with main characters that solve crimes with the aid of ghosts. (I really enjoyed Amanda Steven's Graveyard Queen series) Yet, this book felt different. I think it was the humor Terri Reid injected into the dialogue. The mystery wasn't much of a mystery, but the plot didn't really suffer from the lack of suspense. I still wanted to know how it's all resolved. Now I'm eager to listen to the next book, Good Tidings, to see where things go with Mary and Bradley.

    "Good Story but Lousy Narrator"

The storyline is entertaining but the narrator nearly ruins the it. I don't know if she's just too young, if she's just learning to read or if it is the producer's fault but Ms. Spencer hesitates too often, making the reading choppy and unprofessional.

I will attempt to listen to the next in the series (Good Tidings) in the hope that she has honed her reading skills. If it's more of the same, I won't bother with the third.

A tad action, mix in some history, throw in some battle & a sprinkle of mystery. A dash narration with added heart & a novel can become art

    "where to begin"
    Any additional comments?

This is a tricky one to review, normally if i like a book i finish it, i dont like a book (can generally tell within the first hour) i will return it, however this is a grey area.

I like the concept of the book/main character because it is an outside the box approach to a mystery and one i have not come across before (besides ghost whisperer).

However that is about as far as the entertainment went, the narrator does an ok job, but its no award winner and the book itself is written in a slighty disjointed manner in some parts and pretty terrible in others.

The plot line did keep me guessing towards the end which was a bonus, despite the most inaccurate gunman and unstrategic killer. It kept me entertained enough to finish it, but not entertained enough to listen again.

If you like the sample audio give it a go, but if your on the fence give it a miss.

"i enjoyed the whole series but"
Would you consider the audio edition of Loose Ends to be better than the print version?

    unknown

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Mike because he is funny.

What does Erin Spencer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    i love her voice

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    disturbing

    Any additional comments?

I have listened to the entire series and I can only say that these people know an awful lot of bad people and it seems that they should move to a nicer place. Every other person they know is a serial killer or a wacko. After the first 2 books it got kind of redundant.

    "Love these books!"
What made the experience of listening to Loose Ends the most enjoyable?

    Love the book.

    Any additional comments?

I'm on book 5 in this series I love all the books. Terri Reid did a great job. There great mysteries. There's a love story - mystery without fowl language and sex. There just something you can really enjoy and listen anywhere. I love her books. The reader does a great job with the story. I hope there will be many more of her books.

    "Very Enjoyable Book"
If you could sum up Loose Ends in three words, what would they be?

    Interesting, Fun Read

What was one of the most memorable moments of Loose Ends?

Mary O'Reilly's interactions with various ghosts, particularly the murder victim.

What about Erin Spencer’s performance did you like?

I really like the sound of Erin Spencer's voice, which I feel is important when you are listening to a book. The "wrong" voice can ruin an otherwise good book. I also like the way she pauses a little before saying "he said or she said" and she doesn't read too fast. Occasionally, I thought she put the wrong inflection or emphasis on some words/phrases. I sometimes found myself saying the words/phrases differently in my mind, but that's just my opinion. I think trying to use a man's voice for Bradley and other men in the story didn't really go over very well. It came across as a little silly. However, I would definitely listen to more of these books. In fact, I have put all of them on my Wish List. They are well-written, enjoyable stories and kudos to Terri Reid for keeping them pretty clean. Vulgar language and/or suggestive dialogue causes me to lose interest quickly, even if the book is good. I wouldn't call these books page-turners but they are interesting enough to keep me wanting more.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Do you know who your friends are?
