Publisher's summary

Jack Ryan Jr.--along with the covert warriors of the Campus--continues to uphold his legendary father’s legacy of courage and honor in this thriller from number one New York Times bestselling author Tom Clancy.

Privately training with special forces, he’s honing his combat skills to continue his work within the Campus, hunting down and eliminating terrorists wherever he can--even as Jack Ryan Sr. campaigns to become President of the United States again.

But what neither father nor son knows is that the political and personal have just become equally dangerous. A devout enemy of Jack Sr. launches a privately-funded vendetta to discredit him and connect him to a mysterious killing in his longtime ally John Clark’s past. All they have to do is catch him.

With Clark on the run, it’s up to Jack Jr. to stop a growing threat emerging in the Middle East, where a corrupt Pakistani general has entered into a deadly pact with a fanatical terrorist to procure four nuclear warheads they can use to blackmail any world power into submission--or face annihilation.

Typical Clancy but WAY too many characters

I lost track of some of the characters at the beginning of the novel because there were so many! However, I was able to focus on the major players about midway. This is the First book I read with Lou diamond Phillips as the narrator and he did an excellent job. I love Scott Brick but Lou is now on my list of preferred narrators!

Five star listen

Any additional comments?

Very topical, accurate, enjoyable, believable, varied and a great story. Well, that's it in a nutshell. I do still have my doubts about Jack Ryan Jnr stories but he is probably less of the story than some of the favourites of the past. You can tell a great sequence of stories are being developed.

Highly recommended to people who like Tom Clancy books (and Mark Greaney too of course)

Lou Diamond Philips does a good job.

Jack Jr. Takes Charge

Jack Ryan, Jr. is going to make sure that the Jack Ryan legend lives on. Locked On passes the torch from father to son. While Jack Sr. appears in the book, it is only a cameo role. The spotlight is on Jack Jr. as he becomes an integral part of The Campus. He still has a lot to learn from John Clark and the rest of the campus crew but he is on his way to establishing his own character and identity separate from his dad. The narration was outstanding bringing each of the characters to life. At times the technical descriptions were a little tedious and the ending was a little incomplete and not quite satisfying but certainly provided the setting for the next adventure of Jack Jr. No book is perfect and this was a very good book. With Jack Jr's father as POTUS, his girlfriend established (more or less) and Clark, Ding and Dom there to get him through the tough times, I hope the wait for the next installment is not too far off.

Doesn't compare to the "classics", but still good

Any additional comments?

After buying The Gray Man, by Mark Greaney, I bought Locked On. I enjoyed Gray Man even though it was short and felt more like a movie script than a spy novel. Ever since Teeth of the Tiger I have felt like Tom Clancy had lost his motivation to create another masterpiece and the fact that he is using co-authors proves that he just doesn't have the will to continue the story lines. With that said, I do recommend this book. It is obvious from the writing that the outline comes from Clancy but the actual writing comes from Greaney. There are some phrases and word cues which come directly from The Gray Man. Lou Diamond Phillips is alright, probably better than most but definitely not a Scott Brick or Dick Hill. I sometimes struggled to tell the difference between the characters, he doesn't seem to have an extensive range. He does do a great job with Mary Pat Foley and the other female character. I also thought his Jack Ryan was decent, but Sr. doesn't play a huge role in this story. Also, the book does end with a tease and I was half-tempted to burn a credit on Threat Vector but decided to hold out and hopefully pick it up during one of Audible's specials, which is the only reason I bought Locked On.

Epic

Tom Clancy's books are approaching the epic level he achieved in the 80s and 90s. Amazing story made even better by an incredible performance by Lou Diamond Phillips. Hope your reading this Lou cuz I'll listen to whatever u decide to read.

Good cliff hanger movie but very partisan

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Less political

Would you recommend Locked On to your friends? Why or why not?

No. Too partisan.

Did Lou Diamond Phillips do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes.

Could you see Locked On being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No.

Any additional comments?

Tom Clancy has a great page turner style. If your political views are anyting other than far right, some of the passages may make your neck hairs bristle.

Lou Diamond Phillips is fantastic, what a fabulous voice. Tom Clancy's characters are great, another great book, from a great writer. I can hardly wait for the next in this series, the ending leaves you wanting more.

Left me scratching my head at times...

Dont get me wrong. Tom Clancy sure knows how to describe a fight scene, but at points in this novel I found myself having to rewind to figure out whats going on! with the political side of things and all the crazy names of foreign characters. There were also numerous abbreviated orginizations that kind of got me confused and again, getting lost. Overall I think that the story is great opposed to the fact that it is-at times-hard to read. Lou Diamond Phillips definately made this book tolerable enough to finish. Good read if your on the up-and-up of politics both in country and afar.
